Job summary

Valmont Industries, Inc. in Brenham, TX is seeking a Fitter Welder to join the 3rd shift. You will tack weld small components to pole shafts using FCAW, read drawings, and assemble parts in the Mid‑Size Department.

The position requires blueprint reading and welding experience. The night schedule runs Mon–Fri, 11:00 PM–7:00 AM, with a starting pay of $27.66/hr plus $1.00 shift differential and potential bonuses.

Qualifications

  • Ability to use common manufacturing math.
  • 1 year experience reading and using blueprints.
  • 1 year experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, or graduation from a welding program.
  • Must pass the FCAW weld test and maintain certification.

Responsibilities

  • Use GMAW to tack weld small components to poles and SAW for structural welds.
  • Position shafts and use a jib crane to lift components.
  • Read drawings to determine parts and arrange components.
  • Use a plasma torch to cut steel and create holes; wear PPE.
  • Use measuring tools to measure distances and angles; convert fractions to decimals.
  • Work in confined areas and move around poles.
  • Operate grinders, buffers, and drills to assemble products.
  • Maintain required competencies and certifications; report training needs.

Position Summary

While working under the supervision of the Production Supervisor/Leadperson in the Mid‑Size Department, the Fitter Welder assembles products of the unit by tack welding small parts to pole shafts using the FCAW welding process, following prescribed codes, procedures, specifications, and drawings.

Nights: 3rd Shift

Standard Schedule: Monday – Friday 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM. Additional hours may be required outside this schedule.

Compensation

Starting Hourly Pay Rate (LG10): $27.66 plus $1.00 shift differential per hour. Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year, and 2 years. Eligible for annual discretionary bonus.

Essential Functions
  • Use GMAW process to tack weld small components to poles and SAW process for structural welds.
  • Manually position shafts on a stationary turner and use a jib crane to lift components.
  • Read and interpret drawings to determine parts needed and arrange components.
  • Use a plasma torch to cut steel, creating holes for hand hole rims, arm mounting simplex, couplings, and other small parts; wear protective eyewear or hood.
  • Use measuring tools (tape, levels, squares, angle finders) to measure distances and angles; perform conversions between fractions and decimals.
  • Work in confined areas; move around and over poles as necessary.
  • Use motorized grinders, buffers, stone grinders, and drills to assemble products.
  • Maintain required professional competencies, certifications, and licenses.
  • Report training needs and consult management if performing untrained work.
Required Qualifications
  • Must read and write in English.
  • Ability to use common manufacturing math.
  • 1 year experience reading and using blueprints.
  • 1 year experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, or graduation from an acceptable technical training program focused on welding.
  • Must pass the FCAW weld test and maintain certification.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years experience in an assembly environment.
  • 2 years experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • 2 years experience operating hand and/or power tools.
  • Ability to accurately and honestly check one’s own work for quality assurance.
  • Passion and integrity, with a drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
Working Environment And Physical Efforts
  • Physical efforts include standing 80%, bending 15%, and handling an average weight of 25 lbs.
  • Exposure to heat, welding fumes, noise (requires hearing protection), hot and cold ambient conditions, sparks from grinding and welding, and possible heat fatigue.
  • PPE such as protective eyewear, hearing protection, and flame‑retardant clothing is required.
  • Potential for burns from hot steel, eye injuries from sparks, and hearing loss if PPE is not used.
