Job summary

Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a student-focused Paraeducator for Freedom Middle to support students with special needs in a self-contained setting.

Responsibilities include assisting with daily work, maintaining a safe learning environment, and helping with assessments. Preferred candidates have an Associate’s degree and 2+ years with children; MANDT training is a plus.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates Degree preferred; 2+ years experience with children preferred.
  • Special requirements include MANDT training as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with organization and completion of daily work.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing environment and support social skills.
  • Monitor and redirect student behavior in small groups.
  • Organize instructional materials and files.
  • Assist with assessments and communicate using sign language or transliteration when needed.
  • Perform non-instructional duties such as cafeteria, bus, hall, and office duties.

Job Description

Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a student-focused, dedicatedParaeducatorsto assist teachers and other professional practitionersby providing instructional support in self-contained classrooms with students who have special needs (Autism, Developmental Delays, Multiple Disabilities, Learning Support and Behavior Support) whoseeducational needs are not met by a general education environment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist students with the organization and completion of daily work assignments
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and healthy atmosphere, which may include assisting students with social skill development, personal hygiene, toiletry needs/toilet training
  • Follows established procedures for monitoring and redirecting student behavior when supervising small groups
  • Maintains and organizes students instructional materials and/or cumulative files
  • Administer and/or assist with preparing for various assessments for students as necessary
  • Uses special skills (i.e. sign language, transliterating, advanced computer training) to assist in two-way communication between the teacher and the student as necessary
  • Performs additional non-instructional duties including, but not limited to, cafeteria duty, bus duty, hall duty, and office duty

Education and Experience:

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred

  • Associates Degree from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of two (2) years working with children within an instructional, educational or related setting

Special Requirements:

  • Special education teachers assigned to work with students with emotional disabilities should have been trained in MANDT methodology and should receive additional training, as appropriate, annually.
