Job summary

Parsons Unified School District 503 is seeking a Middle School Custodian to clean and maintain district facilities, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and efficient operations. This role supports daily classrooms, common areas, and outdoor spaces.

Starting Date: Immediately. This is a full-time position with responsibilities including cleaning schedules, basic maintenance, event setup, and adherence to SDS and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and understand cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of minor repairs and building/grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy items.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a cleaning schedule for floors, whiteboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment and restrooms.
  • Keep school building and grounds neat and clean (sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, play areas).
  • Comply with local laws for storage and disposal of trash.
  • Assist in inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; request additional supplies as needed; know SDS.
  • Assist with lunchroom setup (tables/chairs).
  • Perform preventive maintenance and report major repairs to the principal.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Clean and maintain district facilities using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification(s)/License(s):

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Clear and valid Kansas driver’s license

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, whiteboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
  • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed. Knowledge and upkeep of safety data sheets (SDS).
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
  • Monitor heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal.
  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
  • Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open, and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job and timeliness.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Mental Demands/Physical Requirement/Environmental Conditions:
  • Requires the ability to frequently use power tools and equipment, including but not limited to a floor buffer/stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, other hand tools, shampooer, lawn mower, edger, and weed eater.
  • Requires the ability to frequently stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push/pull, or twist.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy items (45 lbs. and over) daily.
  • Requires the ability to frequently walk, climb stairs/ladders/scaffolding; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching, and overhead reaching.
  • Requires the ability to work both outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, on and around vehicles and machinery with moving parts.
  • Requires the ability to frequently work with exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts.
  • Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful situations.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally work prolonged or irregular hours.
  • Requires timeliness and regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
