Job Description

CTE Computer Science Teacher – Middle School

Position Purpose

The CTE Computer Science Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, engaging instruction in computer science and information technology courses to middle school students. The teacher will provide students with opportunities to develop computational thinking, problem-solving, digital literacy, coding, and technology skills that support college and career readiness.

The teacher will implement the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and North Carolina Career and Technical Education standards while creating a classroom environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world application of technology skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in middle school Computer Science and Information Technology courses.
  • Implement the North Carolina CTE curriculum and applicable course competencies.
  • Provide hands-on learning experiences that allow students to apply computer science concepts and technology skills.
  • Teach concepts such as computational thinking, algorithms, programming/coding, problem-solving, digital literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and technology applications as appropriate to assigned courses.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the academic and developmental needs of diverse learners.
  • Incorporate project-based, collaborative, and inquiry-based learning strategies.
  • Integrate appropriate technology and digital resources into daily instruction.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and productive classroom environment.
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely feedback to students and parents.
CTE Program Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high-quality CTE program aligned with North Carolina CTE standards and Rutherford County Schools expectations.
  • Provide students with opportunities to explore careers related to computer science, information technology, and emerging technologies.
  • Connect classroom learning to real-world applications, careers, postsecondary education, and workforce opportunities.
  • Promote career awareness and career readiness through classroom activities, projects, competitions, and other appropriate experiences.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, attendance, and required CTE documentation.
  • Participate in CTE professional development and maintain current knowledge of computer science and technology trends.
  • Collaborate with the district CTE department regarding curriculum, instructional resources, assessments, and program initiatives.
Student Support and Classroom Management
  • Establish clear classroom expectations and maintain an environment conducive to learning.
  • Monitor student behavior and implement appropriate classroom management strategies.
  • Provide additional support and intervention when students experience difficulty mastering course competencies.
  • Collaborate with counselors, exceptional children staff, administrators, and other school personnel to support student success.
  • Encourage students to develop responsibility, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, CTE teachers, administrators, and other instructional personnel.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities and school improvement activities.
  • Participate in parent conferences, faculty meetings, professional development, and other school activities.
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Pursue continued professional growth in computer science education, instructional practices, and emerging technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or appropriate administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid North Carolina Professional Educator License in an appropriate Career and Technical Education – Computer Science and Information Technology Education area or eligibility for appropriate NC CTE licensure.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer science, information technology, and technology-related concepts.
  • Ability to develop and deliver standards-based instruction.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, administrators, parents, and community partners.
  • Ability to effectively integrate technology into instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching computer science, information technology, or a related CTE program.
  • Experience working with middle school students.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Technology Education, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications or professional experience in computer science or information technology.
  • Experience with programming/coding, cybersecurity, robotics, web development, or other computer science applications.
  • Experience with project-based learning and technology integration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of computer science and information technology concepts.
  • Knowledge of current instructional practices and technology trends.
  • Ability to teach students with varying levels of technology experience.
  • Ability to develop engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Employment is contingent upon meeting all requirements for employment with Rutherford County Schools and maintaining appropriate North Carolina educator licensure.
