Ottawa Hills Middle School in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a Middle School Boys Basketball Coach for Winter 2027. The coach will organize athletes, teach fundamentals, and lead a team with emphasis on teamwork and safety. Collaboration with the Athletics Director and school staff is essential.

The role requires high school diploma or GED, 18+, background check, and First Aid/CPR plus concussion training prior to starting. This is a full-time school-based coaching position under GRPS.

Athletic Coach (Secondary Grades 6-12)

Wage: Schedule C of the GREA contract and prior experience

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION:GRPS will create educational opportunities and experiences, through athletics, that will enhance scholar achievement, scholar development and school culture.

JOB SUMMARY

A coach is responsible for organizing athletes and teaching them the fundamentals of sport. A coach is responsible for training them to compete as a team and individually.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Modeling and teaching skills necessary to succeed.
• Supporting scholar academic expectations, responsibilities, and achievements.
• Developing the knowledge and understanding of Grand Rapids policies and procedures as it applies to athletics.
• Promoting and enforcing the scholar-athlete code of conduct.
• Connecting athletic experiences with life experiences.
• Providing an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration among coaches and players
• Becoming an integral part of and developing rapport with the Grand Rapids community including administration, coaches, parents, and scholars.
• Modeling good sportsmanship always.
• Creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for scholar athletes.
• Understanding their leadership style and its impact on scholar-athletes.
• Game and practice attire should be professional and appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must be 18 years of age or older and clear a criminal background check.

• Playing experience at the high school or college level and/or coaching experience required

• Proof of current First Aid and CPR certifications prior to the first day of coaching
• Must provide certificate of completion for online concussion training course from either the Centers for Disease Control or the National Federation of State High School Associations prior to the first day of coaching.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of scholars.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
