Job summary

Children and Families First Delaware Inc. in Delaware seeks a School-Based Counselor to support students' mental health within a middle school setting.

You will deliver brief screenings, individual and group therapy, and collaborate with teachers and families to promote emotional growth and academic success. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, maintain confidential records, and participate in multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • Clinical license (LCSW, LPCMH, LMFT) preferred or LMSW eligible.
  • Must take the licensure exam within 2 years of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health counseling for students (individual, group, family).
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on assessments.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school staff and parents to support well‑being and academics.
  • Maintain confidential records of therapy sessions and progress.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and plan comprehensive support.
  • Educate and train school staff on mental health best practices.
  • Advocate for students’ needs and connect to external resources as needed.
  • Provide crisis assessment and clinical interventions; conduct school-based group therapy.
  • Travel to attend meetings and trainings; work full‑time with benefits.

Description

  • Join our dedicated team as a School-Based Counselor, where you will play a vital role in supporting the mental health and well‑being of students.
  • You will work collaboratively within a dynamic educational environment to provide essential therapeutic services, fostering a nurturing atmosphere that promotes emotional growth and academic success.
  • The Behavioral Health Consultant Program is a year‑round program providing brief mental health screening and individual, group and family mental health counseling services in middle school settings across the state of Delaware.
  • Provide intervention for students and families that address the student’s behavior and family issues that impact school performance and social and emotional development.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on student assessments and needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and parents to support student well‑being and academic success.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of therapy sessions and student progress.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss student cases and develop comprehensive support strategies.
  • Educate and train school staff on mental health awareness and best practices for supporting students.
  • Advocate for students’ mental health needs and connect them with external resources and services when necessary.
  • Provide assessment, planning, counseling/therapy, referrals, advocacy, and collateral contacts.
  • Establish comprehensive plans for services to ensure student and family needs are met.
  • Conduct school based group counseling/therapy using an evidenced‑based model.
  • Provide crisis assessment, clinical interventions, psycho‑educational groups and training to school professionals, parents, guardians and family members.
  • Adhere to an evidenced‑based social work model, principles and practices.
  • Document all screenings, assessments and consultations in appropriate database.
  • Travel required to attend meetings and training.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or related degree with a clinical license (LCSW, LPCMH, LMFT), preferred. Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or related degree and license eligible (LCSW, LPCMH, LMFT), required. Must take the exam within 2 years of hire date for clinical licensure. Professionals with a master’s degree in social work must have a minimum of an LMSW upon hire.
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development
  • Knowledge of therapeutic techniques and interventions for school-aged children
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and school administration
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate and confidential records
  • Experience with crisis intervention and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices in school-based therapy.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, which meets the requirements of the agency’s insurance carrier and reliable transportation.
