Job Title: Custodian

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provide a clean and safe environment for students and staff by performing the following duties.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One to two years related experience desired
PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS
  • Report to work regularly and on time, prepared to perform appropriately assigned duties throughout the day, in service to students, staff, and the community.
  • Prepare for and perform all assigned duties required by one's job description in a positive and collaborative manner.

  • Identify, report, and/or if possible control unsafe conditions or safety hazards in order to maintain safe and secure working and learning environments.
  • Demonstrate professional respect and integrity when interacting with students, parents, staff, community members and other stakeholders. This includes and is not limited to verbal, nonverbal, personal and electronic interactions.
  • Comply with federal laws, state statutes, Board policies, and related administrative guidelines that prohibit coercive, harassing, threatening, retaliating, bullying or discriminating conduct.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dispose of debris and maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner
  • Report to Head Custodian or Lead Custodian, Buildings and Grounds Supervisor any damaged, broken, loose fixtures and/or equipment
  • Secure building; check building to assure maximum security
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Maintain a daily work routine as established by the Head Custodian and Buildings and Grounds Supervisor to adequately service the buildings, grounds, and person
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, intervention specialists or members of the school community.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

  • Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails, and pencil sharpeners
  • Remove cobwebs and clean windows
  • Polish furniture and woodwork
  • Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials
  • Clean and sanitize assigned school, e.g., restrooms, classrooms, spills, etc.
  • Help with setup and cleanup for various school activities
  • Use, measure and relabel chemicals per OSHA standards
  • Clean carpets
  • Wash all furniture, walls, halls, windows, window seals, and doors
  • Disinfect water fountains
  • Spot mop and mop classrooms
  • Remove writing on walls
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
  • Dispose of debris and maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner
  • Adjust to various locations and work requirements as needed, perform other duties as assigned by the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor
  • Perform minor repairs, including, but not limited to, repair desk, painting.
  • Request needed equipment, materials and supplies
  • Perform seasonal duties such as salting and snow removal, litter removal, as directed by the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor and Head or Lead Custodian.
  • Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue in school building restrooms
  • Secure building, check building to assure maximum security
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Maintain a daily work routine as established by the Head or Lead Custodian and Buildings and Grounds Supervisor to adequately service the buildings, grounds, and person
  • Remain alert for dangerous, hazardous conditions, or items in need of maintenance
  • Set up equipment and furniture for special events and use of building for school and community functions
  • Clean hallway glass display cases
  • Clean school building lounges
  • Replace light bulbs as needed
  • Scrub, strip, seal, and wax floors
  • Assist in the control of all maintenance and custodial tools and supplies
  • Assist work crews on assigned tasks
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Buildings and Ground's Supervisor and Head or Lead custodian.
