Job summary

LJB Inc. in Houston, Texas seeks a Mid-level Structural Engineer to advance fall protection design—an essential element of our safety practice.

You will analyze, design, plan, and create structural components for fall protection projects, coordinating with clients and staff to deliver safe, compliant solutions. Responsibilities include developing layouts, performing calculations, and producing construction documents while traveling 50-75% as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, architectural, or mechanical engineering (structural emphasis preferred).
  • 5+ years of engineering experience (design of structural projects and fall protection preferred).
  • CAD experience (Revit and Bluebeam preferred); RAM or other structural analysis software experience.

Responsibilities

  • Documents existing conditions to accommodate fall protection additions (e.g., fixed platforms, fall arrest anchorages, horizontal lifelines).
  • Analyze building components to support fall protection systems (structural steel, cold-formed steel, cast‑in‑place concrete).
  • Develop a layout of fall protection systems to address customer needs and coordinate with the existing structure.
  • Prepares calculations detailing engineering design.
  • Assists with the preparation of construction documents.
  • Coordinates with design staff to ensure accurate document and drawing production.

We are looking to fill the role of a Mid‑level Structural Engineer to work for our Safety practice in our Houston, Texas office. The Mid‑level Structural Engineer will analyze, design, plan, and create structural components and systems as they lead fall protection design projects for LJB clients.

Salary Range: $90,000 – $130,000 based upon experience, certifications, and regional market standards.

Mid‑level Structural Engineer Essential Functions
  • Documents existing conditions as needed to accommodate additions of fall protection systems, including fixed platforms, fall arrest anchorages, and horizontal lifelines.
  • Analysis of building components used to support fall protection systems, including structural steel framing, cold‑formed steel framing, and cast‑in‑place concrete.
  • Develop a layout of fall protection systems to address customer needs and coordinate with the existing structure.
  • Prepares calculations detailing engineering design.
  • Assists with the preparation of construction documents.
  • Coordinates with design staff to ensure accurate document and drawing production.
  • Perform tasks within Revit and other CAD to execute assigned engineering tasks.
  • May coordinate projects by communicating with clients regarding project issues and attending meetings.
  • Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completing various training initiatives: attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending in‑house systems/management training (LJB provided).
Additional Responsibilities And Duties
  • Willingness to travel (overnight stays based on supported projects) to various U.S.-based locations. (50 to 75% travel)
  • Understanding/Training in OSHA/ANSI fall protection standards.
  • Ability to pass background checks, drug tests, and MVR checks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, architectural, or mechanical engineering (degree with structural emphasis preferred).
  • 5+ years of engineering experience (possessing knowledge and experience in the design of structural engineering projects and fall protection preferred).
  • CAD experience (Revit and Bluebeam preferred) RAM or other structural analysis software experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Knowledgeable of industry codes and standards such as OSHA 1910 and ANSI Z359.
Core Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team settings.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to traverse worksite in different types of weather and bend, climb, stretch, reach, and lean to perform duties.
  • Must meet the weight capacity of design perimeters of fall protection systems (between 130 to 310 lbs.).
  • Understands the exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds at a time.
