Job summary

Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. is seeking a experienced materials tester to join the Wichita team.

The role focuses on qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials and finished components to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include assisting engineering with testing requirements, developing testing methods for composites and metals, and using precision measurement tools.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience testing raw materials and products.
• Ability to apply knowledge of engineering and science to testing materials (metals, composites, sealants, adhesives, rubbers, plastics).
• Proficiency with precision measurement instruments and shop mathematics.

Responsibilities

• Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, packaging materials, and finished products to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory specifications.
• Assist Engineering by establishing testing requirements and providing test data.
• Develop or apply testing methods to validate conformance and improve efficiency.
• Extract information from prints, charts, or work orders to prepare details and assemblies for bonding/paint.
• Operate ovens/autoclaves and perform leak tests on bags or assemblies.
• Cut, sand, and finish composite/metal parts and tools to required tolerances.

This role is at Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, supporting Spirit's Commercial Business Units (Spirit Commercial). Spirit Commercial designs and builds commercial aerostructures, including for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, one of Boeing's three business units and the premier manufacturer of commercial jetliners for decades. Spirit Commercial's core products include fuselages, pylons, nacelles and wing components, with a focus on innovative composite and aluminium manufacturing solutions.

Position Responsibilites:

• Performs a variety of qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, packaging materials, and/or finished products from manufacturing, to ensure compliance to customer and regulatory requirements and specifications in regard to chemical, physical, and mechanical properties.
• Assist Engineering in establishing testing requirements and providing test data.
• Apply knowledge of engineering and science to conduct tests on metallic and non-metallic materials (e.g., metals, composites, sealants, adhesives, rubber products, plastics) to validate compliance with conformance specifications and provide consultation on related issues.
• Applies existing techniques and procedures with recommendations and implementation for improved efficiency, or devises and develops new analytical test methods and techniques.
• Obtain required information from prints, charts, sketches, work orders, documents, verbal and electronic information.
• Use and control of solvents and cleaning solutions in the preparation of details, tools, and assemblies for bonding and paint per established procedures.
• Load, unload and operate ovens and autoclaves in the curing of parts and assemblies.
• Place vacuum and pressure bags over and inside wrapped parts and tools, and test for leaks.
• Cut fabrics and composite materials to size using knives, shears, automated material cutters etc.
• Sand, polish molds and/or bond assembly tools to obtain smooth surfaces.
• Apply parting agents to molds and bond assembly tools.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

• 5+ years of experience with raw materials testing

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

• Use shop mathematics and precision measuring instruments to complete work assignments.
• Utilize lay-up tools in the fabrication of composite and metal assemblies.
• Fiber/Void/Resin Content Testing on pre-impregnated materials
• Sample prep of composite materials for testing

Summary Pay Range - Mid-Level (Level 3): $52,600 - $80,600
