Job summary

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Mid-Level/Project Dam Safety Engineer in Austin, TX with 5+ years in dam-related design and construction (embankment, concrete, hydraulic structures).

In Texas, you will focus on inspection, evaluation, rehabilitation design, and risk-informed decision making for diverse clients. The role combines technical work with management responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program; Master’s preferred.
  • Texas PE license or reciprocity ability.
  • 5+ years of dam engineering experience.
  • Experience with dam safety design methodologies and regulations.
  • Proficiency with CAD/visualization tools.
  • Willingness to travel and perform field work.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering analysis and design calculations for dam projects including inspections and risk assessments.
  • Assist with engineering reports, specifications, and drawings.
  • Prepare construction drawings and technical figures with emphasis on civil/structural design.
  • Conduct visual inspections of dams and hydraulic structures.
  • Periodically visit sites during construction.
  • Mentor junior engineers and develop cost proposals.
  • Manage projects: planning, budgeting, scheduling, invoices.
  • Collaborate within the Austin office and other Schnabel offices.
  • Travel as required.

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Mid-Level/Project Dam Safety Engineer with expertise in one or more disciplines related to dam engineering (i.e. hydrology, hydraulics; geotechnical engineering; or structural engineering) and practical experience (>5-yrs) in design and construction of embankment dams, concrete dams, and hydraulic structures to support our growing team in Austin, TX. We are seeking experienced, motivated candidates with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

In Texas, Schnabel focuses primarily on the inspection, evaluation, rehabilitation design and construction of existing dams and hydraulic structures, as well as risk informed decision making for a variety of public and private clients. This position offers a combination of technical work and management responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering analysis and design calculations for dam engineering projects. Typical projects include dam safety inspections, risk assessments, geotechnical investigations and analysis, seepage and slope stability analysis, structural analysis and design, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, dam upgrading design, bid support, construction contract administration and resident engineering services.
  • Assist with preparation of engineering reports, technical documents, and technical specifications.
  • Prepare construction drawings and other engineering figures with emphasis on civil and/or structural design.
  • Perform visual inspections of dams and hydraulic structures.
  • Conduct periodic site visits during construction.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Assist with developing cost proposals.
  • Perform project management activities including planning and executing work, managing project budgets and schedule, and reviewing and approving invoices.
  • Work as a team member within the Austin office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.
  • Periodic travel will be required.
Required Skills/Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or other related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Texas (preferred) or the ability to seek reciprocity upon employment.
  • At 5 years of relevant technical experience in inspection, evaluation, design and construction of dams and hydraulic structures. Texas experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency with common computer-aided analyses and modeling programs applicable to dam engineering.
  • Experience and knowledge of applicable state and federal dam safety design methodologies, policies and regulations. Texas experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency with common drafting and visualization programs such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, ArcMap/GIS, and/or Google Sketch-up.
  • Experience preparing construction drawings and technical specifications.
  • Experience with construction of earth dams, concrete dams, and hydraulic structures.
  • Willingness and ability to periodically perform field work and travel.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and well-organized.
  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently.
