Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent evaluations of occupational safety and health programs to assess effectiveness, consistency, and compliance.
  • Review safety management plans, SOPs, job hazard analyses, training records, incident reports, corrective action systems, and related documentation.
  • Evaluate program implementation against applicable occupational safety and health requirements.
  • Identify program strengths, deficiencies, implementation gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop practical, risk-based recommendations to strengthen program performance and worker protection.
  • Apply industrial hygiene principles to support occupational health objectives.
  • Characterize workplace exposures using industrial hygiene methodologies.
  • Develop exposure assessment records, monitoring plans, and risk-prioritization documentation.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, executive summaries, and briefings for project leadership.

THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON BID AWARD.

The Industrial Hygienist provides technical support for DOI occupational safety and health programs through hazard assessments, exposure evaluations, program reviews, data analysis, and development of risk-based recommendations. The position supports workplace health protection initiatives, regulatory compliance efforts, exposure assessment programs, technical reporting, and stakeholder engagement to improve occupational health and safety outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent evaluations of occupational safety and health programs to assess effectiveness, consistency, and compliance.
  • Review safety management plans, standard operating procedures, job hazard analyses, training records, incident reporting processes, corrective action systems, and related documentation.
  • Evaluate program implementation against applicable occupational safety and health requirements.
  • Identify program strengths, deficiencies, implementation gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop practical, risk-based recommendations to strengthen program performance and worker protection.
  • Apply industrial hygiene principles and accepted exposure assessment practices to support occupational health objectives.
  • Characterize workplace exposures using accepted industrial hygiene methodologies.
  • Evaluate actual and potential employee exposures to chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, thermal, and psychosocial hazards.
  • Develop and document Similar Exposure Groups (SEGs) and workplace exposure profiles.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments.
  • Conduct or support industrial hygiene monitoring, including air sampling, noise assessments, and other exposure measurements.
  • Analyze exposure information to establish priorities for additional evaluation and control measures.
  • Use DOI systems, including the Safety Management Information System Exposure Assessment Module (SMIS EA), to document industrial hygiene information.
  • Enter and maintain accurate workplace, process, hazard, employee assignment, and exposure assessment data.
  • Develop exposure assessment records, monitoring plans, and risk-prioritization documentation.
  • Maintain complete technical records, including field notes, sampling records, analytical reports, and calibration information.
  • Develop project plans, exposure evaluation strategies, and monitoring approaches aligned with project objectives.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, executive summaries, briefings, and recommendations.
  • Develop Exposure Assessment and Control Workplans and Routine Monitoring Plans.
  • Present findings, conclusions, and recommendations to project leadership and stakeholders.
  • Support project meetings, status reviews, and final customer briefings.
  • Interview supervisors, managers, safety personnel, workers, and subject matter experts to gather relevant information.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations effectively to workers, management officials, and project leadership.
  • Coordinate activities with project managers, Contracting Officer's Representatives (CORs), and government stakeholders.
  • Support implementation of occupational health and safety initiatives, corrective actions, and control measures.
  • Participate in kickoff meetings, project status reviews, site visits, and field activities.
  • Support quality control activities and participate in technical peer reviews.
  • Travel as required to support fieldwork and project objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to apply industrial hygiene principles, theories, and concepts to occupational health and worker protection issues.
  • Possess skill in conducting workplace hazard assessments and qualitative and quantitative exposure evaluations.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings and practical recommendations clearly to workers, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to support the implementation and continuous improvement of workplace health and safety programs.
  • Possess skill in developing accurate, well-organized technical reports and occupational health documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, exposure assessment methodologies, and the hierarchy of controls.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards, occupational health regulations, and applicable federal safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, thermal, and psychosocial workplace hazards.
  • Knowledge of AIHA exposure assessment strategies and their application in workplace evaluations.
  • Ability to evaluate workplace risks and recommend feasible, effective control measures.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collect, validate, analyze, and interpret occupational exposure data.
  • Ability to prepare clear technical reports, project plans, presentations, and briefings for varied audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage assigned priorities, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to travel and safely perform office and field assessments, as required.
