Job summary

nou Systems, Inc. is seeking a Mid-Level AI Engineer to design and deploy AI/ML solutions for defense, cybersecurity, and space control markets. You will work on DRL analytics, XAI, and model interpretability, collaborating with data scientists and educating non-technical teams about ML value and limitations.

You will lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and help win proposals. Strong Python, DL experience, and the ability to obtain an active Secret clearance are required.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Strong curiosity and ability to mix state-of-the-art methods.
• Ability to read/apply research literature and develop solutions.
• Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.

Mid-Level AI Engineer

Salary Range: $125,000.00 To $200,000.00 Annually

We are pleased to announce the opening for an AI Engineer who will join our Technical Solutions division and become part of our rapidly growing technology company operating in missile defense, cybersecurity, test range modernization, biotechnology, and space control marketspaces. You will be part of a team designing machine learning solutions from the lab to the field.

Responsibilities:

You will develop, train, and analyze AI/ML systems such as deep reinforcement learning (DRL) analytics, explainability (XAI), adversarial machine learning methods, and model interpretability tools. You will strategically plan projects and architect elegant solutions. You’ll work on a mix of projects, some of which will include other data scientists, others of which will require you to help educate non-data-science teams on the value and limitations of machine learning solutions. You will:

• Architect AI solutions and navigate difficult tradeoffs.
• Help identify and design training data sets.
• Implement and customize AI models from open literature.
• Visualize and communicate your results in written documents and oral presentations.
• Brief technical concepts and results to non-specialist audiences.
• Bring in new work to the Technical Solutions division through proposals and conferences.
• Help develop junior engineers. You will add value beyond your own technical contributions.
• You’ll support multiple teams and must be able to work effectively with other teammates.

Basic Qualifications:

• A master’s degree in computer science, math, physics, or a related field (or bachelor’s degree plus 2 additional years of experience).
• Strong intellectual curiosity. Our solutions often require creative implementations and combinations of state-of-the‑art methodology.
• Ability to identify, understand, and apply relevant research literature
• You must possess or can obtain an active Secret clearance.

This is a mid-senior level position. We are looking for extensive hands‑on experience with deep learning models. We expect strong software development fundamentals in Python and the ability to organize a team to work efficiently. This position requires technical ingenuity, intellectual curiosity, hands on engineering ability, and a passion for building tangible products. We appreciate engineers who are resourceful and creative problem solvers. We are looking for great written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interface with customers. We are looking for someone who is a team player and is glad to lead a variety of AI projects as opportunity presents.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Excellent understanding of the statistical foundations of machine learning.
• Ability to cleanly structure machine learning projects in Python.
• Experience with deep learning models (supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning) using PyTorch, Tensorflow, or Jax.
• Experience with MLOps tools (PyTorch Lightning, Optuna, MLflow, etc.)
• Experience deploying and maintaining AI models in production.
• Experience with DevOps tools (Git, Gitlab, CI/CD, Remote Computing, Docker)
• Experience with time series data, satellite imagery, and graph neural networks.
• Experience leading AI projects that require multidisciplinary solutions.
• Demonstrated experience explaining technical concepts and data analysis results to non-specialist audiences, both through written documents and oral presentations.
• Experience participating in SBIR or STTR projects or similar research programs
• Experience working in a fast paced environment with rapid prototyping
