Job summary

X-energy seeks a Microreactor System Engineer to execute rigorous systems engineering processes for design, integration, and lifecycle management of complex nuclear systems. The role uses MBSE within PLM frameworks to verify product requirements and document design decisions and interfaces.

Responsibilities include leading lifecycle activities, risk mitigation, and cost/feasibility considerations, while collaborating across engineering disciplines and maintaining conformity to X-energy quality

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited degree in engineering is required.
  • Level III/IV experience levels specified with potential degree in lieu rules.
  • Experience with systems engineering software tools.
  • Knowledge of ISO 15288 lifecycle processes and MBSE methods.

Responsibilities

  • Apply systems thinking to analyze and design complex systems.
  • Lead lifecycle efforts including requirements, architecture, and interface management.
  • Develop and maintain MBSE models within PLM frameworks.
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Write and review engineering documentation and communicate progress.
  • Ensure cross-disciplinary integration and adherence to QA processes.

Job description

X-energy is hiring Microreactor System Engineers to join its team. This role is responsible for executing rigorous systems engineering processes to support the design, integration, and management of complex nuclear systems throughout their lifecycles. Working within established model-based systems engineering frameworks, this position ensures all system components work together effectively and meet project requirements. The Systems Engineer focuses on verifying and validating product requirements according to the systems engineering lifecycle process while maintaining clear documentation of design decisions and system interfaces.

Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Apply systems thinking and take a holistic approach to solve problems, analyze and design systems, considering the interdependencies and interactions between various components.
  • Lead and manage systems engineering lifecycle efforts surrounding:
    • Stakeholder and operational analysis
    • Requirement identification, decomposition, and management
    • Functional decomposition and modeling
    • Logical system architecture development and modeling
    • Physical product definition, interface management, and change control
    • Design integration and testing
    • System verification and validation
    • Concept of operations development and modeling
  • Develop and maintain system behavior models using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools within established Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) frameworks.
  • Lead the identification and monitoring of technical risks and the development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support value engineering activities including cost analyses, economic feasibility assessments, and cost reduction opportunity identification.
  • Write and review engineering documentation, reports, and communicate technical details and project progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Execute systems engineering processes within X-energy's quality management framework.
  • Work across engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of system components and subsystems.
  • Perform work in accordance with X-energy quality assurance procedures to ensure engineering products meet required standards.
  • Always maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication.
  • Lead the execution the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities section of this document, without close supervision and some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to more junior team members with the execution of the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job ProfileTask/Responsibilitiessection of this document.
  • Lead small groups of engineers to solve complex technical problems and deliver high quality engineering work products on time and within budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering, or other engineering related discipline from an ABET accredited institution required.
  • Level III: Typically, five years of experience in an engineering role.

  • Level IV: Typically, ten years of experience in an engineering role.
    • A master’s degree in engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of two years of experience.
    • A Ph.D. in engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of three years of experience.
    • Previous experience at X-energy exceeding performance standards may be in lieu of years of experience.
  • Experience with systems engineering software tools.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in a minimum of one of the following areas:
    • System Lifecycle Processes (ISO 15288)
      • Operational & Stakeholder Analysis
      • Requirements Management
      • System Design & Interface Management
      • Design Integration & Testing
      • Verification & Validation
    • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Tools and Methods & Product Lifecycle Management Systems
      • e.g. Teamcenter PLM, Cameo, Capella, Genesys, SysML, and DOORS
