Job description

Overview

The Microbiologist is responsible for performing laboratory testing to detect, isolate, and identify bacteria and other microorganisms in clinical specimens. This role supports accurate diagnosis, treatment decisions, and public health monitoring by ensuring high-quality microbiological analysis within a regulated diagnostic laboratory environment.


The ideal candidate combines strong technical laboratory skills with attention to detail, compliance awareness, and a commitment to patient safety.


Responsibilities


  • Perform microbiology testing on clinical specimens including cultures, gram stains, and organism identification.

  • Identify bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms using manual and automated diagnostic methods.

  • Conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and interpret results according to laboratory standards.

  • Maintain strict adherence to CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and laboratory safety guidelines.

  • Document and review test results accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

  • Prepare and maintain culture media, reagents, and quality control materials.

  • Monitor specimen integrity and ensure proper handling procedures.

  • Participate in quality assurance, proficiency testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate with pathologists, medical technologists, and laboratory leadership to resolve testing discrepancies.
