Job summary

Smurfit WestRock in Stevenson, Alabama seeks a Finance Manager to lead financial operations, partnering with plant leadership to translate data into actionable insights for improved performance.

You will manage monthly closing, budgeting, forecasting, cost analytics, and reporting to mill and corporate teams, while developing reports that drive operational decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of related experience in pulp and paper or manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Excel and Hyperion SmartView capabilities.
  • Experience with Qlik, Power Apps (Power BI), Alteryx preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly financial closing process and produce P&L and Balance Sheet reports.
  • Coordinate and generate financial reports, variances and narratives.
  • Track production and operating metrics for the mill.
  • Present results to mill and Corporate leadership teams.
  • Lead budgeting and forecasting for mill production, materials, labor, and depreciation.
  • Analyze diagnostics and scorecards to identify cost reduction opportunities.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly cost reports for fiber, energy, chemicals, and labor.
  • Analyze maintenance spend and capital projects; report variances timely.
  • Collaborate with Performance Excellence teams to drive improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and Sarbanes-Oxley controls.

Finance Manager
The opportunity:

If you're a hands-on finance leader who enjoys partnering with the business, solving complex challenges, and driving results, this opportunity is for you. As a Finance Manager in Stevenson, Alabama, you'll be a trusted advisor to plant leadership, helping to translate financial data into actionable insights that improve operations and support long-term growth. You'll have the opportunity to lead key financial processes, influence business strategy, and make a visible impact within a thriving organization. You will be an integral part of the Financial Team working with other departments, divisions, and corporate staff to provide data and analysis of overall mill operations. The Finance Manager will report to the Sr. Financial Manager.

How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:
  • Lead the monthly financial closing process and generate, balance, review and interpret the required P&L and Balance Sheet reports
  • Coordinate and generate all financial reports including variances analysis and financial narratives against prior year, forecast and budget targets.
  • Generate and track all production and operating related metrics as it relates to the mill
  • Clearly and effectively communicate the monthly, quarterly and YTD financial results to mill and Corporate leadership teams.
  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting process for mill production, raw material usage, operational labor, equipment rental, depreciation and other categories as requested.
  • Analyze Mill Diagnostics, Scorecard, Operational graphs and works with Mill Leadership to determine opportunities for cost reduction.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly cost reports as they relate to fiber, energy, chemicals and labor and work with mill leadership to identify cost reduction opportunities.
  • Lead analysis of maintenance spend and capital project improvements and report variances to Mill leadership team and division management on a timely basis.
  • Work in conjunction with Mill and Division Performance Excellence teams to identify and track cost improvement opportunities.
  • Work with all mill personnel to ensure enforcement of company accounting policies and procedures to protect and secure the company’s assets in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Be responsible for all Industry and Government Survey reporting as it relates to the mill
  • Develop and automate reports required by local management, governmental agencies, Division and Corporate locations to provide insight into mill operations
  • Support all production, inventory, balance sheet, AP, tax, and other corporate requests
  • Review accruals, usage trends, income statement, and balance sheet balances to ensure accuracy before the final close
  • Develop and maintain documentation of internal controls applicable to the assigned functional areas
  • Responsibility managing and coordinating all inventory testing periodically and document results
What you need to succeed:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of related experience in Pulp and Paper industry or manufacturing is preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong understanding of key metrics
  • Detailed oriented team player who can consistently meet deadlines, adapt quickly, work well with all levels of the organization, and possess the ability to work independently as needed
  • Advanced skills in Excel and Hyperion SmartView
  • Experience with Qlik, Power Apps (Power BI), Alteryx preferred, but not required
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, computer, and team building skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a continuously changing environment
  • Experience leading financial professionals.
  • Strong Analytical and Financial Modeling Capabilities.
