Job summary

Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is seeking an experienced engineer to lead the Naval Architecture/Structural Engineering segment within the Fleet Sustainment Engineering organization. You will guide subordinates, analyze designs, and ensure compliance with specs, schedules, and cost constraints.

The role involves evaluating materials, modeling structures, and addressing dynamics, stability, fatigue, and thermal analyses for naval ships, with heavy emphasis on accuracy and collaboration

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
  • Master's degree in Engineering with professional registration and 4 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the Naval Architecture/Structural Engineering segment within Fleet Sustainment Engineering, directing subordinates.
  • Analyzes, researches, and develops structural engineering specifications for metals, composites, or non-metallic materials.
  • Assesses foundation design allowables and conducts structural modeling and analysis.
  • Specialties may include dynamics, loads, stability, stress fatigue, and thermal analysis.
  • Utilizes tools such as NASTRAN, FEMAP, AutoCAD, FCCS, PC Calc/SHCP and related software.
  • Examines factors like manufacturability, materials availability, interchangeability, and cost in design decisions.
  • Ensures accuracy and timely issuance of weight reports, stability requests, shipchecks, and related docs.
  • Supervises technical staff to meet schedules and resolve problems; participates in centralized projects.

The Role
  • Manages the Naval Architecture/Structural Engineering segment of the Naval function within the Fleet Sustainment Engineering organization, providing objective-oriented direction to subordinates utilizing management guidelines and general policies.
  • Analyzes, researches, investigates, and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, equipment, and maintenance designs.
  • Analyzes foundation design allowables and associated structural modeling.
  • Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue, and thermal analysis.
  • Tools utilized may include NASTRAN, FEMAP, AutoCAD, FCCS, PC Calc/SHCP, and a variety of software applications.
  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specifications requirements and cost.
  • Checks completed Engineering and Design products for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
  • Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
  • Ensures accuracy and timely issuance of availibility weight reports, damage control updates, stability requests, incline experiments, shipchecks, and associated reports.
  • Provides direct supervision/management to the technical subordinates and other staff members to meet schedules or resolve technical or operational problems.
  • Participates in many centralized functional projects.
  • Assists with budgets, schedules, and performance standards for the Naval Arc/Structures group.
  • Conducts briefings and participates in technical meetings for internal/external representatives concerning specific operations.
Must Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
  • A Master's of Science degree in Engineering and professional registration with 4 years of relevant experience.
Nice to Have
  • Working knowledge of Naval Architecture and Ship Structures engineering concepts and practices.
  • Working knowledge of Ship Stability concepts and practices.
  • Familiarity with General Overhaul Specifications as related to naval ship modernization.
  • Familiarity with structural analyses techniques and incline experiments.
