Job Summary

The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco is seeking adjunct instructors to teach the following courses for the Spring Semester. Students in the MFT Program graduate with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. Graduates are eligible to gain hours for licensure through the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for the MFT and have the option of gaining eligibility for the License in Professional Clinical Counseling.

Courses

• CPSY 632 - Child and Adolescent Development

  This course will provide an overview of child and adolescent development, and will include developing the knowledge and skills in counseling children and adolescents. Students will learn to assess behavior and incorporate developmentally, ethnically, legally, and gender appropriate strategies to meet the needs of counseling children and adolescents. Analysis, synthesis, and appropriate application of child development and counseling theories to the practice of counseling children and adolescents is emphasized.

• CPSY 646 - Community Mental Health

  This course helps students understand the model of community mental health recovery and the skills needed for mental health practice. Students will participate in hands‑on experiences through a community mental health immersion experience, in addition to learning about strength and evidence‑based therapeutic interventions aimed at mental health consumers of community mental health care.

• CPSY 683 - Clinical Psychopharmacology

  This course explores basic principles and applications of psychopharmacology in the mental health field. Students will survey principles of drug action and neurotransmitter systems in the nervous system and various classes of psychiatric drugs. The historical, social, economic, political and cultural influences on the use of psychiatric medication are also explored.

• CPSY 649 - Sexuality and Gender Issues in Therapy

  This course is designed for counseling and mental health service professionals whose work will bring them into contact with clients experiencing problems and concerns with their sexuality and gender. Students will develop knowledge, assessment, and intervention skills with regard to sexuality and gender-related experiences and deepen awareness of personal perceptions, attitudes and the role of power and privilege.

• CPSY 651 - Adult Development and Geropsychology

  This course provides an overview of the biological, psychological, and social developmental tasks and life events of the adult years, with emphasis on sociocultural, gender and family issues, aging, and long‑term care. Analysis, synthesis, and appropriate application of adult development and aging is emphasized.

• CPSY 665 - Substance Abuse and Addictions Counseling

  This course is a study of the etiology, assessment, treatment of various types of addiction, including alcoholism and other substance use disorders. Theories of addiction counseling are reviewed and applied to counseling and therapy work with diverse individuals, couples, families, and groups, with an emphasis on developmental, cultural, and biological contexts.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in MFT, Ph.D./Psy.D in Clinical or Counseling Psychology required. • Instructors must integrate issues of diversity, equity, and advocacy in their teaching.
