Job description

Description

Leidos is hiring licensed behavioral health professionals to join our Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) program as Mission Ready Reserve counselors to support Laughlin AFB, TX. Join the mission to support U.S. military service members and their families as they work through important military life adjustments while serving their country. The Military and Family Life Counselor Mission Ready Reserve (MRR) position offers a unique opportunity to serve a vital role, providing non‑medical support—including counseling, consultation, and outreach—to our nation’s military children and families. Non‑medical counseling is preventive and aims to address issues before they become greater challenges.

This posting is for our Mission Ready Reserve team. We are seeking candidates with the flexibility to pick up shifts both locally with potential to travel for short‑term coverage. These roles would be as needed, and the duration of the work will vary from 2–3 months or 6–9 months.

Responsibilities

  • Face‑to‑face counseling to military service members and their families (individual, couples, family, and children).

  • Visibility at assignment, supporting military‑connected students, parents, and staff.

  • Recommending appropriate referrals and handoffs based on clinical skills to military and community resources.

  • Offer presentations to address social skills development and social‑emotional learning crucial for childhood early development.

  • Promote creativity and positivity through approved materials.

  • Build rapport with service members, spouses, and children by attending installation and community events.

  • Help children with transition adjustments, such as a new school and a new home.

  • Participate in regular in‑service training or other contract activities as assigned.

  • Communicate information regarding trends and issues at assigned installation to Team Leads.

  • Respond to emergent situations in any physical location on a military installation.

  • Traverse long distances to both indoor and outdoor locations, including rugged terrain and weather‑exposed environments.

  • Travel to locations outside of a military base in a variety of physical environments.

  • Comply with site‑specific requirements to work at designated locations.

Environment

At the direction of the Department of Defense, duties are performed in multiple indoor locations (~60%) and outdoor locations (~40%). Indoor locations are within a military installation, a school setting or a child development center (CDC) controlled by the DoD. Outdoor locations involve traversing uneven grassy, gravel, and/or dirt areas, ascending/descending stairs, and exposure to the weather. CDC settings frequently involve sitting on the floor to interact with children for up to 2 hours at a time. As a Mission Ready Reserve MFLC you may experience various environments depending on the assignment.

Licensure Portability

Under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), licensed Military and Family Life Counselors may provide non‑medical counseling services to military families at any location in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory or possession, regardless of where the counselor is licensed. Counselors may hold any independent and clinical license recognized by the Secretary of Defense.

Benefits

  • No insurance to file.

  • No progress notes required.

  • No treatment plans to develop.

  • iPad provided for easy digital reporting, with no PII or PHI.

  • Paid federal holidays.

  • Free and unlimited behavioral health training.

  • Reimbursement for job‑related license renewal fees.

  • Eligibility to participate in 401(k) retirement plan.

  • Centralized support through a Counseling Center of Excellence.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Behavioral Health Professions (MS/MSW/MA/PhD).

  • Valid independent mental health license from any U.S. state or territory (LCSW, MHC, MFT, LPCC, Psychologist).

  • U.S. citizen.

  • Ability to pass a basic background check, Child National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI/CNACI) clearance.
