Laboratory Metrologist - Overview

McCallie Associates Inc, a subsidiary of Alutiiq, LLC offers an opportunity for a dynamic Laboratory Metrologist to join our team and support the NASA Laboratory Services Contract at John C. Stennis Space Center. The Laboratory Metrologist is the first line supervisor for Metrology Technicians in their respective laboratory and provides guidance and leadership to subordinates based on organizational goals and company policy. The role interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to organizational policies and operates with a moderate degree of independence under established policies and procedures, with supervision from the Measurement Standards and Calibration Laboratory (MS&CL) Manager. The Laboratory Metrologist receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from the MS&CL Manager and/or Sr. Metrologist as needed. Responsibilities include solving practical problems, developing and validating technical procedures, prioritizing and assigning work tasks, maintaining communication with the MS&CL Manager, and ensuring compliance with NASA standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform first-line supervision tasks, including assigning work priorities, approving PTO requests, approving timesheets, recommending awards or disciplinary action, and fostering technician growth through coaching, mentoring, and training.
  • Ensure compliance with NASA‑STD‑8739.12 by planning, organizing, and coordinating activities of personnel involved in the rework and calibration of Inspection, Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) traceable to the International System of Units (SI). Establish and maintain schedules that align with work requests, budget, and time constraints.
  • Maintain awareness of progress on assignments and keep the MS&CL Manager, customers, and Program Management informed on the status of all laboratory operation phases.
  • Assist in evaluating capital equipment requirements, make procurement recommendations, compile data and justifications, and routinely communicate needs to the MS&CL Manager.
  • Interface with customers to enhance communication, planning, and coordination of requested tasks.
  • Exercise independent judgment and evaluate solutions to technical metrology problems, conduct or direct complex technical tasks, approve standard operating and calibration procedures, and train personnel as required.
  • Maintain and assure compliance with Quality Assurance, Safety, and company policies and procedures.
  • Develop training plans for cross‑training and technician development.
  • Evaluate performance and provide feedback to technicians, tracking technician proficiency areas.
  • Perform duties of Metrology Technician when needed to meet established metrics.
  • Conduct technical procedure validation and review, and approve technical procedures.
  • Conduct measurement uncertainty analysis and budgets under supervision of the Sr. Metrologist or MS&CL Manager.
  • Perform reverse trace analysis as directed and under supervision.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of metrology industry best practices and continuously expand metrology knowledge across all measurement disciplines.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Pay Rate: $60,000 to $70,000 annually

Requirements
  • Demonstrated expertise or proficient knowledge in at least two of the following measurement areas:
    • Dimensional
    • Flow
    • Pressure

    • Force/Torque
    • Mass
  • Professional experience in metrology and business, with specialized training commensurate with assignment, considered as selection discretion.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability or potential and professional communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum five years of experience in metrology or a related field.
  • Competent in developing, modifying, and writing calibration methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of measurement uncertainty principles and measurement traceability.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a NASA PIV badge.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Associate degree in Metrology or Electronics.
  • Familiarity with computer programming.
  • Proficiency in developing, modifying, and evaluating MetCal automated calibration routines.
