Job summary

Metropolitan Utilities District is seeking a Meter Mechanic to assist in field maintenance of water meters and metering devices. The role includes testing, repairing, and calibrating meters and related components, with responsibilities for documentation and safety compliance.

Candidates should have a GED or high school diploma and at least one year of mechanical experience; forklift and safety certifications are required upon hire.

Qualifications

  • Required - High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1 year of proven mechanical work experience.
  • Knowledge of gas and water metering devices and software is preferred.
  • Experience with metering programs and servicing meters is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in field testing, repair, maintenance, overhaul and calibration of meters 1-1/2 inch and larger.
  • Install, replace, and troubleshoot electronic components of gas and water meters.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete service orders using enterprise software.
  • Operate forklift and other material handling equipment as needed.
  • Adhere to safety requirements and DOT drug/alcohol/testing provisions.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Meter Mechanic assists the Industrial Water Meter Mechanics in the

field to remove, replace, test, inspect and perform repairs on water meters one and one-half inch

(1") and larger throughout the Metropolitan Utilities District service area as part of a District

maintenance program. The Meter Mechanic assists in the yearly downloads of pressure recorders and

conducts repairs and tests on gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves. The Meter

Mechanic completes field repairs of encoder receiver transmitters (ERT) on gas and water meters.

This position also performs work that compiles with the District meter sampling program.

Education

Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Required - Minimum of 1 year of proven work experience demonstrating mechanical

Preferred - Experience in metering programs to include maintenance, repair and testing of gas

and water meters and appurtenances.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing

Required - Have and maintain a valid drivers license Upon Hire and

Required - Forklift Certification have and maintain within 60 Days and

Required - Hearing (audiogram) testing. Upon Hire

Required - Pre-employment and/or post-offer physical demands screening. Upon Hire

Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug

and Alcohol testing provisions. This includes post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable

suspicion, follow-up, and return to duty testing. Upon Hire

Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation

Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule, thus must acquire and maintain qualifications for all covered

tasks assigned to this position under the Districts Operator Qualification Plan. within 90 Days

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Gas and Water metering devices and software.

Knowledge in water supply plumbing to include, but not limited to, sweating joints, cutting

pipe, routing and removal of pipe, meter installations and other service line plumbing devices.

Ability to work independently and complete service orders as assigned utilizing enterprise

software and established policies and procedures.

Proficient in the use of various hand tools, power tools, and welding torches common and

specific to the plumbing field.

Ability to accurately draft and maintain records both manually and electronically.

Demonstrated accuracy when performing mathematical calculations.

Read and comprehend technical manuals, installation instructions, and operating instructions for

testing equipment.

Knowledge of District residential, commercial, and industrial water meters and appurtenances is

preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in water supply plumbing is preferred.

Strong time management skills and ability to schedule and meet necessary deadlines.

Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external

customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation. Ensure work

performed is in accordance with District policy and to ensure procedures and customer service

standards are met or exceeded.

Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include

familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise

wide software (e.g., SAP).

Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.

Essential Functions

Assists Industrial Water Meter Mechanic in the field to test, repair, maintain, overhaul and

calibrate industrial 1 and larger water meters using properly calibrated equipment.

Install, replace, and troubleshoot the electronic components of gas and water meters used by the

District for metering usage.

Maintain correct information on District work/maintenance orders and ERT module data.

Perform scheduled and repair maintenance on District meters to include, but not limited to,

testing, cleaning, disassembly/ assembly, painting, proving, tagging, installing, and storing water

and gas meters and related appurtenances.

Operate and maintain vacuum-blast machine to sand blast meters.

Operate a hand truck, forklift, and other material handling equipment.

Repairs and tests gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves.

Assists in the yearly downloads of pressure recorders

Assists Industrial Gas Meter Technician in functions of large gas and water meters and

appurtenances in the shop.

Under Supervision, repairs gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves.

Clean and maintain all equipment used in the cleaning, testing and repair of meters and

Complete service orders as assigned utilizing enterprise software and established policies and

procedures.

Perform the physical requirements of position. (See attached Physical Demands)

Assist in annual inventory of meters and appurtenances as required.

Comply with and maintain knowledge on proper confined space entry procedures to include, but

limited to, permitting, air monitoring, air exchange and evacuation plans and ensure vault

preparation.

Conduct safety inspections of assigned vehicle and equipment.

Drive District vehicle.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Field: Work inside and outside in all weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of

time.
