Job description

Meteorologist / Weather Reporter

WGAL-TV, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate serving the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York, PA market has an immediate opening for a Meteorologist / Weather Reporter.

We’re looking for both expertise and personality. You understand the science, and you also understand that great weather coverage is about connecting with people. You can explain why tomorrow’s forecast matters, be a trusted voice when severe weather threatens, confidently report from the middle of a developing weather story, and bring energy and curiosity to a community event.

If you’re a meteorologist who loves forecasting, thrives during live coverage and genuinely enjoys connecting with viewers and the community, we want to hear from you.

Our ideal candidate will be one who thinks outside the box – can deliver a polished in-studio forecast and then turn right around and produce an engaging, memorable vertical video about a timely weather topic.

Innovation is critical: whether it’s in the middle of a snowstorm or a community fair, you’re always looking for new and creative ways to tell the best story. We’re looking for a storyteller at heart: with the ability to write and craft a weather-related report fit for any screen. You will produce enterprise content and deliver accurate forecasts across television, digital and other platforms. This position reports to the News Director.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze weather data and develop accurate, timely forecasts for the WGAL viewing area
  • Deliver compelling, conversational and easy-to-understand in-studio weather forecasts
  • Build graphics and forecasts with little supervision
  • Provide urgent, authoritative and calm coverage before, during and after severe and high-impact weather events
  • Report live from the field during severe weather, providing viewers with immediate observations, context and safety information
  • Interpret radar, model guidance and other meteorological data and translate complex information into useful information for viewers
  • Create and deliver weather content across television, digital, streaming, social and partner platforms
  • Report live from the field on community events, seasonal stories and other assignments in addition to weather coverage
  • Develop community-focused stories and find opportunities to connect weather with the people, places and events important to our audience
  • Serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for WGAL in the community at station appearances and events
  • Gather, verify and summarize information for broadcast and digital coverage
  • Participate in daily editorial meetings and contribute weather and story ideas
  • Keep newsroom personnel informed about current and developing weather conditions
  • Collaborate with anchors, reporters, producers, photographers and digital teams on coverage across platforms
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of meteorology, weather science and forecasting
  • Dynamic, authentic and conversational on-air presence
  • Ability to combine scientific credibility with personality, warmth and strong storytelling
  • Experience with television weather systems and graphics
  • Strong live reporting skills
  • Digital/social media expertise and enthusiasm for innovative storytelling
  • Must work weekends, in addition to a flexible schedule in the event of severe weather, holiday fill-in coverage, etc.
  • NWA Seal of Approval and/or AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation or intent to work toward certifications.
  • Related military experience will be considered
