Hearst-owned Hearst Television is seeking a Weekday Morning Meteorologist for its Burlington, VT/Plattsburgh, NY market. The role focuses on delivering accurate forecasts and relatable weather stories across TV, radio, and digital platforms.

The candidate will forecast, interpret radar data, and communicate effectively during severe weather, while collaborating in editorial meetings and field deployments on-site in South Burlington.

Qualifications

  • Professional on-air or in-school experience handling breaking news and severe weather coverage.
  • In-depth knowledge of weather science and forecasting.
  • Dynamic on-air presence with a conversational weather presentation.
  • Knowledgeable about how to interpret and translate high-powered radar data.
  • Experience with common television weather systems.

Job Description

WPTZ/WNNE, NBC5, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate station in Burlington, VT/Plattsburgh, NY, has an immediate opening for a Weekday Morning Meteorologist. We are looking for a meteorologist who knows the science and can tell a relatable weather story. You will be an excellent communicator who has a passion for weather and who can deliver an accurate forecast, keeping our viewers and employees safe, conveying appropriate tone, summarizing complicated information, and staying calm in all situations. You will also have experience producing forecasts for multiple platforms. You will report to the News Director.

Responsibilities
  • Weather data analysis and forecasting
  • Working knowledge of radar information (able to interpret and analyze data)
  • Get our viewers ready with accurate, compelling, and understandable weather forecasts on all platforms
  • Will provide urgent, immediate weather information before and during severe weather events
  • Ability to ad lib weather information during breaking news, long-form weather cut-ins, as well as taking cues during on-air reporting
  • Can simultaneously provide content, such as graphics, on TV, for our radio partners, and on our digital platforms
  • Will use all the technology available to us, to tell an intriguing weather story
  • Will be deployed in the field during weather events
  • Gather information and summarize facts and content for broadcast
  • Attending daily editorial meetings
  • Keeping News personnel up-to-date on current weather conditions
  • Attending community appearances
Requirements
  • Professional on-air or in-school experience handling breaking news and severe weather coverage
  • In-depth knowledge of weather science and forecasting
  • Dynamic on-air presence with a conversational weather presentation
  • Knowledgeable about how to interpret and translate high-powered radar data
  • Experience with common television weather systems
  • Experience with live field reporting on weather and other topics
  • Must be able to work all shifts (Holidays and weekends included)
  • NWA and CBM seals are a plus
  • Related military experience will be considered

The estimated base salary range for this role is between $42,000 and $45,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
