Job summary

Mortenson is seeking an experienced MEP Design Phase Manager to lead design phase activities across multiple projects, including estimating, partner selection, scheduling, and quality control. The role oversees design development, system analysis, and commissioning planning for MEP work.

The candidate will coordinate with project teams, review options, and present detailed estimates to clients while maintaining cost data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent field experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of construction experience or equivalent in engineering/project management.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes (IBC, NFPA, IMC, UFC, Energy Codes).
  • Ability to travel up to 70%.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input for acquisition of new projects and lead design phase management.
  • Review MEP options and provide system analyses for project decisions.
  • Coordinate life cycle cost analysis during MEP system selection.
  • Present MEP estimates to clients and engineers; maintain historical cost data.
  • Lead and participate in MEP business partner selection and coordination.
  • Support on-site MEP resources during construction to meet scope, quality and schedule goals.

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking an experiencedMEP Design Phase Managerwho will be responsible for providing overall management direction and expertise for design phase activities for one or more concurrent projects inclusive of project estimating, business partner selection, preliminary schedule, design development, quality control and planning for the commissioning of the MEP scope of work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review MEP options, generate systems analysis, andprovidesystem options for a particularproject
  • Providing meaningful input to the project’s programming and conceptual designactivities
  • Coordinate life cycle cost analysis during MEP system selection
  • Review documents from project award through buyout for system sizing, coordination, interface, and constructability andlogisticssolutions.Identifypotential issues toappropriate engineeringdiscipline
  • Estimating:
  • Provide and/orparticipatein value alternative development with dollarmagnitudes
  • Participate in value alternative review sessions for mechanical and electricaldisciplines
  • Present MEP estimate detail to clients andengineers
  • Maintain mechanical and electrical historical costdata
  • Prepare budgetary MEP estimates based upon program and schematic designinformation
  • Business Partners:
  • Assistbid team in analyzing market conditions and developing bidlist
  • Lead and/orparticipatein MEP business partner selectionprocessincluding soliciting business partners, preparing estimate narratives (scope definition), coordinating design input, developingbid packages, proposal analysis, and finalselection.
  • Provide consistent support for project team(s) and on-site MEP resources during construction to ensure scope, quality and schedule performance goalsestablishedduring design are met by our MEP business partners
  • Evaluate mechanical and electrical changes from businesspartners
  • Assist Project Manager in contract development for MEP businesspartners
  • Integrating 3D/4D modeling technology into the preconstruction phase of theprojects
  • Perform other duties as assigned bysupervisor
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizationallevels
  • Lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectivelymanage performance
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering, Architectural Engineering, MechanicalEngineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent field experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of construction experience, preferably experience with a Mechanical, Electrical Contractor, or a Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing engineering firm
  • Minimum of fiveyearsestimating or on-site project management experience in construction or 5yearsexperiencedesigning or project management at an engineering firm.
  • Thorough knowledge of building Codes and their application in design and construction including, but not limited to, IBC, NFPA's, IMC, IFC, UFC, EnergyCodesor the ability to read and understand them.
  • Strong cross-cultural relationship building and influencing abilities internally and externally at all levelsof theorganization
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem solving, initiative and teamworkskills
  • Computer skills in MicrosoftOffice
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and low-voltagesystems
  • Working knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, scheduling and cost control procedures,drawingsand specifications, and requiredstandards
  • Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input andfeedback
  • Ability to travel up to70%

The base pay range for this role is$113,500 - $170,300.(Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
