Job summary

HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital in Charleston, SC is seeking a Mental Health Tech to join a multidisciplinary care team under licensed nursing supervision. You will perform data collection, monitor at‑risk patients, document observations, and support treatment planning and patient education.

Requirements include BLS certification, CPI training within 90 days, prior behavioral health experience, and nursing assistant or Patient Care Tech certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • BLS certification – American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • CPI within 90 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter.
  • Prior experience in a behavioral health setting.
  • Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Tech/Behavioral Health Tech certification preferred.
  • Basic reading comprehension required.
  • Must possess knowledge and skills required to meet patient needs and complete yearly evaluations.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; effective oral and written communication; computer literacy; ability to manage multiple tasks and work with a team.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care and conducts data collection to initiate therapeutic interventions.
  • Manages groups of patients and documents observations and education provided.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu and communicates with the RN and treatment team.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills, seeks learning opportunities and completes required certifications.

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Behavioral Health Technician is an integral part of a multidisciplinary care team. Under the direction of licensed nursing personnel, the technician operates within the scope of training and hospital guidelines to perform a variety of technical and specialized skills that assist with addressing the treatment plan and needs of the patient. Responsibilities include data collection, risk factor identification, general patient care, documentation, direct observation and monitoring of patients at risk to self or others, and assistance with orientation of new employees, students and trainees.

Position Requirements
  • BLS certification – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 90 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter
  • Prior experience in a behavioral health setting
  • Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Tech/Behavioral Health Tech certification preferred
  • Basic reading comprehension required

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care.
    • Conducts initial and ongoing data collection regarding patients individually and in groups and uses data to initiate therapeutic interventions.
    • Identifies potential risk factors, communicates observations to the RN, and implements interventions under RN direction.
    • Provides comprehensive care, contributing to the plan of care and its revision.
    • Documents observations, interventions and outcomes in the medical record.
    • Provides educational information to patients and families.
  • Manages groups of patients.
    • Plans, leads or co‑leads groups and activities, documenting observations.
    • Assists with patient and family education and documents on education forms.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu.
    • Monitors patient behavior, intervening to ensure safety and documenting in the record.
    • Assists patients in maintaining individual and common areas.
    • Communicates pertinent information to RN and the treatment team.
    • Promotes a therapeutic atmosphere and ensures interventions respect patient rights and dignity.
    • Orients patients and families to programs and expectations.
    • Assists in cleaning and maintaining clinical area order.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills.
    • Seeks learning opportunities.
    • Maintains CPI and BLS certification per policy; completes annual TB testing.
    • Provides care demonstrating competence in techniques.
    • Assists in orienting new employees, students and trainees.
Degree of Supervision Required

General guidance and direction by supervisors or the department manager. The employee will perform most duties independently and in accordance with established policies.
