BCRC is seeking a Mental Health Peer Support Specialist to provide education and support for individuals with mental illness. The role involves modeling recovery skills, helping clients develop coping and advocacy, and increasing resource awareness. Work is 8–15 hours per week, 2–3 days, typically 7:30 a.m.

to 3:30 p.m. You will share your recovery story, assist in goal setting, connect clients with community services, document progress, and ensure confidentiality.

Job description

The Mental Health Peer Support Specialist performs specialized education and support services for individuals with mental illness. This position involves the modeling of recovery skills through assisting individuals with the development of coping skills, advocacy skills, and resource awareness. This position requires flexibility with hours: 2-3 days per week ranging from 8-15 hours per week depending on the needs of the caseload. Scheduled work hours most typically fall between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Models hope, personal responsibility, and self-advocacy by sharing his or her personal recovery story.
  • Acts collaboratively with individuals to create self-directed goals to assist on their path to recovery.
  • Cultivates the individual’s ability to make informed, independent choices.
  • Uses “positive approaches” to motivate individuals whenever possible and maintains confidentiality.
  • Develops opportunities for integration and meaningful roles in the community.
  • Assists the individual with learning how to develop and maintain positive personal/social support networks (friends, family, associates).
  • Links participants with appropriate community services.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and document progress towards recovery goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicant must have lived experience: having personally lived with mental health or addiction challenges and/or an individual receiving mental health services.
  • Able to model a recovery experience exceeding one year.
  • Preferred applicants will be credentialed as a Certified Peer Specialist and eligible for certification through the PA Certification Board. If an applicant is not certified, certification will need to be obtained upon employment.
  • Minimum of a High School or GED Diploma
  • Within the last three (3) years, maintained at least 12 months of successful full or part-time paid or voluntary work experience.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines
  • Must possess basic computer skills to perform job duties, familiarity with Microsoft Office- Word and Outlook.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail and able to meet deadlines.
Job Requirements
  • Education & Experience: Minimum requirement is a high school diploma (or GED) plus 1 year of experience in general industry, manufacturing, or rehabilitation or 30 completed college credits from an accredited institution.
  • Transportation: A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and daily access to a reliable personal vehicle.
  • Clearances: Must pass a mandatory criminal background check.
