Role Description

The Mental Health Counselor provides counseling services to individuals, groups, adolescents, couples, and families. This position conducts mental health screenings, assessments, intake evaluations, crisis response services, and case management services. The counselor collaborates with behavioral health clinicians, certified peer support workers, tribal partners, and other behavioral health professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities are performed in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, protocols, and funding agency requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide counseling and therapy to clients and families.


• Conduct intakes, assessments, follow-up sessions, and case management activities.


• Develop treatment plans, discharge plans, and follow-up care recommendations including referrals.


• Document patient progress through timely and accurate progress notes and maintain psychosocial assessments and treatment plans within the electronic health record (EHR) system.


• Assist tribal behavioral health programs with crisis intervention and postvention services.


• Provide training and technical assistance on evidence-based mental health interventions for tribal behavioral health programs and school-based health centers.


• Deliver mental health promotion and education services for adolescents and their families.


• Coordinate mental health services as required to ensure ongoing compliance with grant obligations.


• Collect and maintain data in compliance with organizational policies and procedures.


• Develop outreach and educational materials, including brochures, flyers, pamphlets, and social media content to support behavioral health promotion efforts.


• Prepare and present data, program outcomes, and narrative reports in both written and oral formats.


• Establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with project partners, community stakeholders, and tribal organizations.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required

• Knowledge of behavioral health assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, crisis intervention, and case management principles.


• Knowledge of current evidence-based and trauma-informed behavioral health intervention models.


• Proven knowledge of present and historical mental health intervention models.


• Experience in curriculum development and delivery of prevention programs.


• Experience developing and delivering prevention, education, and community outreach programs.


• Excellent verbal, written, public speaking, and presentation skills.


• Strong organizational, recordkeeping, and documentation skills.


• Experience maintaining confidentiality of client records and protected health information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.


• Ability to demonstrate good judgement, work independently, and collaboratively work with others, including diverse community members.


• Experience working with Native American adolescents, families, and communities and understanding of important cultural considerations when working with Southwestern Indian Tribes.


• Demonstrated ability displaying cultural humility and working effectively and respectfully in multicultural environments.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field.


• Current New Mexico licensure in good standing as an LPCC, LPC, LCSW, LMSW, LMHC or equivalent.


• Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing mental health counseling and related behavioral health services.


• Completion of background investigation is required as a condition of employment.


• Complete HIPPA certification within 30 days.


• Maintain a valid State driver's license and have ability to drive company-leased vehicles for company and project related business.

Work Conditions

• Ability to travel locally and statewide, including travel to Tribal communities and partner sites, as required.


• Ability to meet vaccination, health screening, or testing requirements necessary for interaction with staff, clients, and the public, consistent with applicable regulations.


• Work is performed in office, clinical, community, and school-based settings.


• May be required to respond to behavioral health crises in community-based environments.
