Job summary

UMass Memorial Health - Harrington Hospital, Inc. is seeking a team-oriented clinical staff member for the mental health unit. The role involves direct patient care, treatment planning, documentation, and milieu safety assessments in an inpatient setting.

You will participate in group activities, communicate with licensed nurses, and help maintain a safe therapeutic environment while adhering to medical policies and patient care standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• CPR certification required on hire or within orientation and every two years.
• Avade 2 restraint training within 30 days.
• Associate's degree preferred.
• Medical terminology and computer skills preferred.
• English reading/writing and clear communication essential.
• Two years health-related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a Mental Health Team member providing direct patient care and documentation.
• Communicate observations to unit nurses and update electronic medical records.
• Maintain patient safety through safety checks and rounds.
• Apply de-escalation tools and follow restraint policy as required.
• Contribute to a safe, therapeutic environment.
• Lead or co-lead group activities and supervise recreational activities.

Participates as a member of the mental health team on an inpatient behavioral health unit. Provides direct patient care including treatment planning, implementing plans, documentation, and milieu safety assessments and activities such as group activities.

Major Responsibilities

1. Serves as a member of the Mental Health Team and serves both internal and external customers including patients, families, nurses, physicians and other colleagues who support the delivery of care and services.
2. Provides clear, timely communication to the units licensed nurses regarding observations and changes seen in the patient. Records behavioral data on appropriate data sheets and the electronic medical record.
3. Maintains patient safety by performing patient safety checks, environmental safety rounds, utilizing fall prevention alternative devices/strategies as directed.
4. Effectively utilizes de-escalation and calming tools and strategies and follows the Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient.
5. Participates and shares responsibility for the development and maintenance of a safe and therapeutic environment.
6. Serves as a leader or co-leader for group activities such as goal setting group, dual diagnosis groups, various activity groups, and structuring and supervising recreational activities. Handles routine situations and must request assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.

Position Qualifications

1. License/Certification/Education:
   1. High school graduate or equivalent.
   2. American Heart Association certification for health care provider CPR required upon hire or during orientation and every two years thereafter.
   3. Avade 2 (restraint) training completion required within 30 days of hire.

   1. Associate's degree preferred
   2. Medical terminology and computer skills preferred
3. Experience/Skills:
   1. Ability to read, write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
   2. Must have effective interpersonal skills to provide respectful, culturally and age-appropriate communication with patients, staff, visitors and others.
   3. Must demonstrate effective problem-solving abilities for routine situations.
   4. Must have ability to read, write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
4. Preferred:
   1. Two year’s experience in a health-related field preferred.
5. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
