Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico seeks an Engineering Support Technologist – Vacuum Technologist to calibrate and certify measurement equipment for NNSA standards laboratories and Sandia line organizations. Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus 3+ years directly related experience.
  • Ability to assemble, disassemble, and troubleshoot electro‑mechanical or pressure/vacuum systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operations of the Vacuum Project within PSL.
  • Apply knowledge of measurement science, systems, equipment, methods, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with PSL engineers/technologists to address measurement and quality issues.

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot precision calibration systems; process data, perform error analysis, and generate certificates/reports.
  • Assemble/modify pressure manifolds and document compliance with SNL Pressure Safety requirements.
  • Contribute to R&D of new measurement technologies.
  • Improve performance/quality metrics for measurement system capabilities and optimize calibration workflows.
  • Travel on a limited basis to support NNSA surveillances and related activities.

Job description

Position Overview

Engineering Support Technologist – Vacuum Technologist (Primary Standards Laboratory, PSL). This role supports Sandia in its global security missions by calibrating and certifying measurement/test equipment for NNSA standards laboratories and Sandia line organizations. Strong problem‑solving skills, technical aptitude in metrology, and knowledge of ISO 17025 are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Support the daily operations of the Vacuum Project within the PSL.
  • Apply knowledge of measurement science, systems, equipment, methods, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other PSL engineers/technologists to address measurement and quality issues.
  • Support research in metrology for development of new measurement technologies and procedures.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot precision electro‑mechanical calibration systems; process measurement data, perform error analysis, and generate certificates/reports.
  • Assemble/modify pressure manifolds and document compliance with SNL Pressure Safety requirements.

Qualifications – Required
  • High school diploma plus 3 years or more of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to assemble, disassemble, and troubleshoot electro‑mechanical or pressure/vacuum systems.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills related to calibration/measurement systems.
Qualifications – Desired
  • Associate’s degree in a STEM field.
  • Experience working in a high‑rigor, high‑quality lab environment with strict adherence to procedures.
  • Experience developing and documenting effective processes and procedures.
  • Experience with high‑precision scientific measurements, including primary/secondary standards and calibration systems for vacuum.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic signaling from test equipment (e.g., multimeters, signal conditioners, oscilloscopes, power supplies).
  • Experience with measurement uncertainty, error propagation, error budgets, and statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent teamwork, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 standard and with lean/6‑sigma, ISO 9001, AS9100 concepts.
  • Programming experience using LabView, Python, C#, or C++.
  • Training in statistics, error analysis, and uncertainty calculations.
  • Experience using large integrated software applications such as Maximo.
Salary Range

$63,800 – $123,400 (estimated; actual salary determined after review of experience, qualifications, and applicable geographic differential).
