Job summary

Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. is seeking a Furnace Operator/Stocker to maintain and stock consumables for the Furnace or Caster and perform general housekeeping, including 5S practices.

You will assist furnace operators, collect and run slag samples, and support ongoing production with timely data entry and equipment handling. This full-time role requires physical fitness and willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to read and follow instructions.
• Experience with steelmaking process preferred.
• Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, days/nights/weekends.
• Leadership skills and ability to lead by example.

Responsibilities

• Unload trucks and stock consumables.
• Operate temperature and sampling device to take readings.
• Maintain refractory and assist furnace operators.
• Record data in production systems.
• Perform 5S housekeeping and general maintenance.
• Train coworkers as needed.

Job Summary:

Primarily responsible for maintaining and stocking consumables for the Furnace or Caster, general housekeeping duties (includes 5S and cleaning), assisting other furnace operators as needed and may be responsible for collecting and running slag samples.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Unload trucks and stock supplies and/or consumables.Operate/stock temperature and sampling device used to take temperatures, oxygen readings and steel samples.May also take care of slag pots/pits as needed (i.e clean out pits with shovels, water, et).Assist in maintaining refractory (patching or gunning).Maintain runner/tap hole.Build and add electrodes.Record data in production systems.Communicate with team members.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Perform daily preventative maintenance and maintain records and inspection on vehicles and mobile equipment, which may include fueling, cleaning, and checking/adding fluids as needed.Assist in training of coworkers as needed.Operate mobile equipment (may include overhead cranes) to transfer product and materials, while following all safety rules and regulations.Perform general 5S activities in the work area.Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.Ability to read, write, and carry out instructions.Specific working knowledge of the steelmaking process and basic math preferred.Ability to use simple specifications, dials, and gauges to regulate electricity and water flow.Specialized experience in work on electric steel furnace is preferred.People/leadership skills and ability to lead by example

You Have:

• Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend from trunk, operate mobile equipment, crawl, kneel, and push and pull objects.Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.Ability to reach, squat, and tolerate prolonged sitting.Ability to lift objects of various dimensions and weights.Ability to tolerate whole body vibration.Ability to operate hand controls with both hands.Ability to operate foot pedals with both feet.Ability to perform sustained overhead reaching on occasional basis.Ability to tolerate extreme ambient temperatures ranging from 0°F to 160°F.Ability to tolerate working in cramped quarters and at heights.Ability to tolerate a swing shift work schedule.Ability to tolerate working in areas where noise levels can reach 120 decibels.The desire to learn new roles and grow with the company
