Medication Technician Job Description
Purpose
Ensure proper medication administration per resident’s physician orders and community policies, while providing personal care and monitoring the wellbeing and environment of residents receiving assisted living services.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- CNA or previous experience working with the elderly in a residential or long‑term care setting preferred
- Current CNA license, or ability to obtain required state licensure
- Ability to take blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, and O2 Sat, or willingness to learn
- Experience reading medical terminology preferred
- Enjoy working with seniors
- Effective relationship building with residents, families, and team members
- Read, comprehend, write, and speak English to communicate effectively with residents, families, visitors, and team members
- Basic computer skills, including Word and Excel
- Represent the community positively and professionally
- Meet all state licensure health‑related requirements
- Maintain current CPR/First Aid credentials
- Maintain current Food Handler credentials
- Maintain annual Continuing Education Credits
- Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation
- Complete required Medication Technician curriculum
- Pass pre‑employment screening: physical, drug and TB testing, and criminal background check
Essential Functions
Medication Administration
- Administer medication appropriately and timely according to regulations, physician orders, and community policies
- Log and centrally store medication; order refills timely to ensure availability for each resident
- Adhere to all medication‑related policies and procedures, including documentation and accountability
- Conduct monthly audits covering label, expiration, and start date checks
- Notify supervisor of concerns or problems with orders/MARs promptly
- Assist Licensed Nurse with printing MARs and reviews as requested
- Update MARs in the computer with new orders or changes when the Licensed Nurse is absent
- Coordinate with pharmacies and doctors’ offices for correct orders and refills
- Carry out objective charting within scope of practice in resident notes daily
- Provide basic first aid daily
- Maintain a clean and tidy medication room
Resident Care
- Review and understand all resident individual service plans
- Assist residents with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, transferring, and ambulation as specified in plans
- Engage residents in meaningful conversation and socialization while providing medication supervision assistance and personal care assistance
- Observe residents for changes in physical, emotional, mental, and social condition, unusual symptoms, accidents, injuries, or unusual occurrences, and report promptly to a licensed nurse and/or supervisor
- Communicate with the Resident Care Team about changes; contact families as needed
- Complete all forms, including incident reports and written and computerized documentation, for communication with other shifts and with licensed nurses, the Executive Director/Administrator, and other team members
- Assist with resident mealtimes in the dining room, serve meals according to proper serving technique, and ensure food is presented attractively
- Encourage residents to participate in scheduled activities and outings, and assist with those activities as needed
- Provide postmortem care for a resident who passes away in the community under hospice
- Act as a role‑model to team members to ensure quality care and monitoring of residents
Housekeeping
- Make resident beds, empty apartment trash, and tidy resident apartments daily and as needed or requested
- Turn down resident beds in the evening if requested
- Change resident linens and towels per community laundry schedule and as needed
- Maintain resident clothing and closet in a neat and orderly manner
- Assist with resident laundry as necessary
- Notify housekeeping team of spills and soiled areas; assist with clean‑up as needed. If no Housekeeper is on duty, clean up spills and soiled areas immediately
- Assist in cleaning walkers, wheelchairs, and other resident equipment as needed
- Assist with other housekeeping duties as assigned
Other Responsibilities
- Attend all required team member meetings and in‑service training sessions
- Answer phones promptly and courteously
- Uphold Residents’ Rights as defined by state regulations and company policy at all times
- Support and uphold all other company policies and service philosophy
- Adhere to company dress code while on duty
- Maintain reliable and predictable attendance
- Other duties as assigned
Salary
Starting hourly wages: $21 – $25
