Job summary

Kettering Health Wilmington is seeking a Laboratory professional to perform diagnostic testing and ensure accurate reporting of results. The role requires appropriate MLS/MT credentials and strong quality control practices.

The position involves coordinating with care teams, maintaining equipment, and adhering to regulatory standards while contributing to patient safety and lab efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program or BS/BA in related science.
  • MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) required or ASCP categorical certification with related BS/BA.
  • Associate degree with 60 credit hours including chemistry and biology; MLT (ASCP/AMT) required.
  • Students completing NAACLS accredited programs within 6 months may be considered for national board eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Performs accurate testing and recognizes abnormal/unusual results.
  • Reports results accurately in writing, verbally, or by fax/computer.
  • Notifies appropriate persons as necessary.
  • Performs and records instrument checks and quality control.
  • Conducts routine equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Identifies QC issues and initiates corrective action.
  • Follows analyzer operation and reagent preparation procedures.
  • Documents and notifies lab leadership as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer functions and department procedures.
  • Engages in lab communications and staff meetings.
  • Prepares samples for testing with proper labeling, preservation, transport, and safe handling.
  • Handles proficiency samples appropriately and notifies caregivers of critical results.
  • Organizes priorities to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Teaches procedures to competent staff and evaluates trainees.
  • Understands disease process theory as it relates to testing and results.
  • Applies accuracy, precision, and correlation studies for assays.
  • Assists in schedules, staffing, inventory, purchasing, and compliance plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains competency before deadlines for lab testing.

Job Responsibilities:



  • Performs accurate testing, recognizing abnormal or unusual results.

  • Demonstrates current knowledge of computer functions and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Actively engages in laboratory communications and staff meetings.

  • Properly prepares samples for testing, including proper labeling, specimen preservation and transport and safe handling techniques.

  • Demonstrates and understands the appropriate handling and reporting of proficiency samples.

  • Notifies appropriate care giver by telephone of critical results and corrected results and documentsnotification in accordance to policy.

  • Organizes and sets priorities in order to complete work assignments in a timely manner.

  • Able to multitask.

  • Teaches procedures for which he/she is deemed competent and evaluates trainees using established forms or examinations.

  • Understands and applies theory of disease process to testing and test results.

  • Understands and is able to perform accuracy, precision, and correlation studies for new and/or existingassays.

  • Provides assistance in areas such as: work schedules, student and staff training, supply inventory, purchasing, performance improvement, and compliance plan.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains as needed and annual competency prior to deadlines, required to perform lab testing.


Job Qualifications:



  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program or BS/BA program in related science that meets requirements for certification.

  • MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) required or(ASCP) categorical certification and a BS or BA in related science.


OR



  • An associate degree from an accredited college/university in Medical Laboratory Science or a related science including 60 semester hours of academic credit including 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology or graduation from a military medical laboratory specialist program.

  • MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) Required.


OR



  • All students who will have completed a NAACLS accredited program within 6 months and would be eligible for national board exam would be considered.


Preferred Qualifications

Skills:


Knowledge and ability to perform testing with accuracy appropriate to the sections in which they work. Knowledge of standardization and quality control theory and ability to troubleshoot without preset criteria. Understanding of safety regulations, regulatory requirements, and statistical methods. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, hospital personnel and physicians.
