Job summary

Conway Medical Center is seeking a Medical Technologist to perform microbiology tests on blood and body fluids in a hospital laboratory, following CAP/QA SOPs. The role requires reporting, maintaining quality standards, and assisting during emergencies.

The MT will use systems like VITEK/BACT-Alert and must hold or be eligible for ASCP certification, with flexibility for 2nd shift and weekend coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year microbiology experience.
• Experience with VITEK and BACT/ALERT systems preferred.
• Prior MT in a hospital-based lab setting preferred.
• Board Certification Required; ASCP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform microbiology laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells and tissues following SOPs.
• Identify bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms for diagnosis and treatment.
• Follow quality control/assurance procedures and perform routine instrument maintenance.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and methods; assist in emergencies as needed.

Position Summary:

The Medical Technologist (MT) will perform microbiology laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells and tissues. The MT will follow standard operating procedures to identify bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms, the results of which are used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The MT will also follow established quality control and quality assurance procedures. The MT will perform routine preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment. The MT will be responsible to troubleshoot instrumentation, culture media, chemicals, reagents, stains, solutions, technical problems and methodologies. The MT will be required to follow producers that follow the standard required by CAP for certification. The MT be able to report back to work during any emergency situation, this includes if needed during inclement weather, mass casualty, internal disaster, etc. The MT will complete other duties as assigned.

Education:

• High School Diploma required
• MLS/MT through one of four ways required:
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Medical Technology or;
  • Bachelors of Science degree, with completion of Board Certification as MT or;
  • MLT degree and grandfathered as Medical Technologist by SCDHEC (Health, Education, and Welfare);
  • MLT degree with completion of qualified Board Certification as a MT.

Experience:

• A minimum one (1) year specific microbiology experience required.
• Previous experience with VITEK and BACT/Alert systems preferred.
• Prior experience as a MT in a hospital based lab setting preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

• Board Certification Required (ASCP certification preferred).

Other:

• Flexibility with scheduled work hour requirements required.
