Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and appropriately interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ’88. Five years of clinical laboratory experience as a certified medical technologist are required, as well as documented expertise in the technical specialty, and the ability to provide leadership in that area.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
- Develop new tests and testing specialties in consultation with physician directors of lab sections.
- Maintain inventory of all supplies related to the specialty area, ensuring appropriate stock levels.
- Implement best workflow or practice models for the technical specialty.
- Train staff in the technical specialty and ensure training documentation is complete.
- Assess staff competency and consult with Supervisors and Physician Directors on corrective actions.
- Perform moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and interpret results consistently with level of training.
- Act as a resource and interpret tests for laboratory users.
- Review testing and procedures performed by other staff for regulatory compliance.
- Prioritize STAT and routine samples, ensuring accurate specimen identification and labeling.
- Ensure sample testing occurs within defined time periods and initiate appropriate action for mislabeled or inappropriate specimens.
- Ensure prepared samples are stored according to standard operating procedure.
- Perform instrument and equipment maintenance and recognize problems, reporting them to appropriate parties.
- Perform QC procedures, assess quality control data, and maintain accuracy.
- Perform analytic testing, assessing validity of results and investigate discrepancies.
- Maintain clear, concise, accurate and legible records of test performance and documentation in LIS.
- Notify appropriate persons of critical alert values, callbacks and maintain records in LIS.
- Assist other laboratory sections as needed and participate in quality improvement activities.
- Maintain competency documentation and attend continuing education as required.
- Support education of students, residents and new staff; participate in teaching activities.
- Communicate inventory, testing status and instrument status to staff.
- Assist with incident reporting, safety hazards and attend mandatory safety sessions.
- Maintain cleanliness of work area and work cooperatively with staff.
- Plan and prioritize tasks, adjust to variable workloads, and maintain open communication with supervisors.
- Perform other duties as assigned or as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science with accredited internship, or a Bachelor’s in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry).
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Preferred – ASCP, NCA, AMT, AAB, HEW, AMS, or equivalent agency certification.
- Experience: Five years of clinical laboratory experience as a certified medical technologist.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Proficiency in CLIA-defined high complexity testing and interpretation.
- Ability to maintain compliance with JCAHO, CAP, FDA AABB, and other regulatory requirements.
- Manual/visual dexterity for specimen preparation and operation of computer software systems.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Venipuncture techniques.
COMPENSATION
Laboratory Compensation Range: $30.05 – $43.75 per hour (based on minimum qualifications).
