Job summary

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is seeking a Laboratory Technician to perform a broad range of clinical lab testing with accuracy and timeliness while maintaining QC/QA standards. You will support patient-centered care and work across shifts in a busy hospital lab environment.

Requirements include a BS in Medical Laboratory Science or Biological Science, ASCP eligible, and 0–2 years of experience. Strong communication and the ability to operate instrumentation are essential.

Qualifications

  • BS in Medical Laboratory Science or Biological Science.
  • ASCP eligible or equivalent certification.
  • 0–2 years of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory techniques and tests with accuracy.
  • Operate instrumentation independently and follow safety guidelines.
  • Maintain quality control and quality assurance standards at all times.
  • Assist with specimen processing, inventory management, and training new staff.
  • Adhere to CHAMP and HRO standards and participate in competency activities.
  • Support ongoing professional development and teamwork across shifts.

Performs a wide range of clinical laboratory testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem-solving skills in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory principles. Maintains effective communication and transfers testing and pending follow-ups between employees and shifts following all CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate technical competency by performing a wide variety of laboratory techniques, including moderate to highly complex tests.
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate instrumentation and/or assigned benches.
  • Operate all department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot instrument failures.
  • Perform tasks that assist with overall operation of laboratory service according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • May assist with training new employees.
  • Assist with specimen processing as needed.
  • Assist with inventory management/control.
  • Meet continuing education requirements.
  • Participate in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth.
  • Perform a variety of routine tests and procedures, perform instrument maintenance procedures, perform routine quality control procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to assure efficient operations of department, including covering other lab sections.
Qualifications

Education: BS Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or equivalent. ASCP eligible or equivalent.

Experience

0–2 years.

Licensure

ASCP eligible.

Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork oriented environment. Maintains procedure knowledge and implements all new and revised procedures in real time. Physical Demand

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. They are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be tested for colorblindness and be able to make necessary accommodations to perform testing accurately. Incumbents as well as external and internal applicants who become disabled must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without the assistance of reasonable accommodation as determined on a case‑by‑case basis.
