Job summary

Penn Medicine Doylestown Health is seeking a part-time Laboratory Associate to support the operations of the Laboratory sections. The role involves accessioning specimens, ensuring proper labeling, and assisting with testing procedures to uphold patient care quality.

Responsibilities

  • Accession and distribute laboratory specimens promptly.
  • Verify specimen requirements and labeling to meet lab standards.
  • Identify inappropriate specimens (hemolysis, QNS) and document cancellations.
  • Reorder tests when necessary, ensuring correct patient data and dates.
  • Distribute specimens to appropriate departments to meet turnaround targets.
  • Perform established laboratory testing procedures and maintain equipment.

Job Summary

To assist in the operation of the Laboratory sections.

Accountabilities
  • Properly accessions and distributes Laboratory specimens.
  • Associate knows correct specimen requirements and how to access the correct specimen requirements for all Laboratory testing.
  • Associate knows the proper labeling requirements for specimens and can recognize those specimens that do not meet the Laboratory standards for labeling.
  • Associate recognizes specimens that are inappropriate for testing (hemolysis, QNS).
  • Associate knows how to cancel specimens that are inappropriate for testing, using correct documentation.
  • Associate can competently reorder tests that have been cancelled, ensuring that the correct patient account, the correct test, and the correct collection date and time is utilized.
  • Associate promptly distributes specimens to the appropriate department so established TAT goals are met.
  • Performs established Laboratory testing procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to independently perform all Laboratory testing as stated in procedure manuals.
  • Associate prioritizes workload works efficiently and makes full use of work time.
  • Associate follows established TATs for routine, urgent and STAT testing.
  • Associate follows all established policies and procedures for Quality Control testing.
  • Demonstrates ability to review QC, implement corrective action, and report exceptions.
  • Associate demonstrates ability to perform routine instrument maintenance, calibrations, and basic troubleshooting of equipment. Knows when to call service.
  • Associate judiciously uses supplies and reagents. Notifies supervisor when supplies are running low.
  • Associate maintains an orderly workstation and communicates so that workflow between shifts is uninterrupted.
  • Interprets Laboratory tests results to ensure quality patient care.
  • Associate’s work is accurate and error-free, without edited results.
  • Associate can recognize abnormal results and follows established protocol for calling the physician/nursing unit.
  • Associate demonstrates ability to identify and solve problems, knowing when to confer with the Lead/Senior Technologist.
  • Associate can troubleshoot out of range quality control, specimen requirement/integrity issues, and instrument malfunctions.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in order to interpret results.
  • Promotes patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of customers and associates at all times.
  • Timely completion of yearly competencies, mandatory job requirements (RAHE, Fire/Safety CE, BLS, Background Clearance, Fingerprinting, etc.) and Continuing Education.
  • Keeps abreast of changes and exhibits a supportive professional attitude.
  • Keeps abreast of and complies with contents in Laboratory Manual, DH Associate Manual, Infection Control Manual, Chemical/Safety Hygiene Manual, Computer and each Departmental Policy and Procedure Manuals.
  • Communicate, consult and share pertinent information with coworkers and supervisors according to established channels and lines of authority.
  • Associate is able to admit errors and accepts responsibility for actions.
  • Associate assists in training/orientation of Lab Associates and students.
  • Associate participates in proficiency testing.
  • Associate has knowledge of Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Associate complies with dress code of department.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree (MT) preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
  • ASCP or equivalent preferred (HEW).
