Job summary

UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, IL seeks a Medical Technologist for the Blood Bank & Core Laboratory. The role is 0.5 FTE, 2:30pm–11:00pm with every other weekend and alternating days off, onsite at Ingalls Dr, Harvey.

The incumbent will perform routine and specialized tests, maintain QC, calibrations, and instrument troubleshooting while supporting a broad menu of tests and antibody identification. Sign-on bonus available.

Qualifications

• B.S. in biological sciences with MT certification or eligible.
• NAACLS accredited Medical Technology program or approved alternative with MLT/ASCP and clinical experience.
• Working knowledge of laboratory information systems and automated equipment.

Responsibilities

• Prepares samples and determines test acceptability per policy.
• Performs routine and specialized lab techniques and reports results.
• Evaluates results and flags critical values; maintains instrument QC and calibrations.
• Operates instruments, troubleshoots issues, and maintains records in LIS/HIS.
• Cross-trains across stations and manages inventory efficiently.
• Adheres to safety, compliance, and standard precautions.

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Medical Technologist in the Blood Bank & Core Laboratory. Here, you will perform routine tests, operate state-of-the‑art instruments, and provide accurate and efficient results. You will be responsible for quality control, instrument maintenance, and method development to support a broad menu of routine and esoteric tests, including antibody identification. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $5,000

Under direct supervision of the Lab Supervisor, the Medical Technologist will obtain, process, analyze, and report patient test results. The Medical Technologist performs quality control and performs basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. This department provides laboratory testing to various related and unrelated health care entities, managed care organizations and non-affiliated hospitals, outpatient clinics and private physicians' offices. We offer a full range of diagnostic services in both clinical and anatomical pathology and have various areas of expertise.

Essential Job Functions

• Prepares samples for analysis and determines acceptability of samples for testing according to departmental policy and procedures.
• Performs standard, specialized automated and non-automated laboratory techniques.
• Evaluates and interprets results. Recognizes/reports abnormal results, identifies, calls and documents critical value results 100% of the time. Accurately verifies results within timeline limit (i.e., stats)
• Operates all laboratory instruments within their section and ensures proper functioning of equipment for patient testing by performing necessary quality control and/or calibrations.
• Trouble shoots instrument malfunction and performs major repairs on selected instruments.
• Maintains records/documentation and processes data and enters results into computer system, demonstrating proficiency on the LIS/HIS systems.
• Has the ability to work all workstations within their assigned department/section and can be cross trained to work at least one station or another.
• Controls and maintains inventory and supplies for section at an optimum level.
• Identifies opportunities to improve departmental efficiency through time and cost savings contributions.
• Provides technical assistance to customers when appropriate and promotes teamwork through communication and support.
• Observes and adheres to all corporate compliance requirements and communicates issues as they arise to the appropriate parties as identified in the Corporate Compliance Plan and Departmental Compliance Plan.
• Adheres to Standard Precautions, Hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures 100% of the time.

Required Qualifications

• B.S. in biological science and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology program plus successful challenge of an accredited proficiency examination is preferred
• Alternate: A B.S. degree from an accredited college or university with 32 semester hours in Biology and Chemistry and a MLT (ASCP) certification and three years full time experience in a clinical laboratory in Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology and Clinical Chemistry within the last 10 years OR a B.S. from an accredited university and five years full time clinical experience.
• MT (ASCP), MT eligible or equivalent
• Working knowledge of medical laboratory technical procedures, concepts, and applications normally attained through successful completion of a baccalaureate degree with specific training in medical technology and/or successful challenge of an accredited proficiency examination
• Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospitals information systems
• Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one year of pertinent laboratory experience

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
