CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Technologist 2 (H) performs microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Moreover, the incumbent facilitates quality assurance and instrument maintenance.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Verifies identification of specimens with physicians’ orders, prepares specimens for testing, and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
  • Analyzes results of testing and interprets abnormal or unusual results.
  • Research and prepare all pertinent patient data and refers all data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Calibrates equipment, orders supplies and maintains inventory of relevant forms and materials.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action while supporting laboratory co‑workers in resolution of similar problems.
  • Administers quality-control tests, according to procedure, and maintains appropriate data recording.
  • Assists with orienting and training employees in laboratory techniques and operations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Certification and Licensing: Current Florida Medical Technologist License

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Performs moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Performs testing in assigned laboratory sections, including Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunology, and other applicable areas based on departmental needs and demonstrated competency.

Reviews and verifies patient results for accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to reporting.

Identifies and evaluate abnormal, critical, unexpected, or inconsistent results and follow established procedures for verification, repeat testing, and notification.

Performs and documents daily quality control activities, evaluates QC results, identifies trends or shifts, and takes appropriate corrective action when QC results are outside established acceptance criteria.

Performs calibration, calibration verification, reagent preparation, instrument checks, and preventive maintenance according to established procedures and manufacturer recommendations.

Operates, monitors, and troubleshoots automated and semi-automated laboratory instrumentation.

Recognizes instrument malfunctions and initiates appropriate corrective actions and service procedures when necessary.

Ensures proper specimen identification, processing, handling, storage, and disposal according to laboratory policies and procedures and maintains specimen integrity throughout the testing process.

Reviews test results, flags, instrument messages, and quality indicators to identify possible analytical errors, specimen-related issues, or pre‑analytical and post‑analytical discrepancies.

Performs required proficiency testing, competency assessments, validation/verification activities, and quality improvement activities as assigned by the department.

Assists with evaluation and implementation of new procedures, instruments, reagents, methodologies, and test systems, including performance of required validation or verification studies.

Maintains accurate and complete documentation related to testing, QC, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and other laboratory activities.

Maintains adequate inventory of reagents, controls, calibrators, supplies, and other laboratory materials and reports shortages, expired materials, or supply issues to the appropriate personnel.

Participates in laboratory inspections, regulatory compliance activities, audits, and quality assurance initiatives, including CAP, CLIA, and other applicable requirements.

Assists with orientation, training, and competency assessment of new and existing laboratory personnel in assigned areas and provides guidance regarding laboratory procedures and instrument operation.

Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, supervisors, pathologists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding testing procedures, specimen issues, critical results, and laboratory-related concerns.

Follow established procedures for reporting critical values and ensure timely and appropriate communication and documentation.

Maintains confidentiality of patient information and complies with applicable privacy, safety, infection control, and laboratory policies.

Identifies opportunities for process improvement and participate in departmental quality improvement, performance improvement, and patient safety initiatives.

Maintains current knowledge and competency in assigned laboratory procedures, instrumentation, regulatory requirements, and applicable laboratory practices.

Performs other laboratory-related duties and responsibilities as assigned, consistent with the employee's qualifications, competency, and departmental needs.
