Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and the successful completion of an accredited medical technology program or the equivalent training, education, and experience.
  • ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized medical technology certification.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests in a designated medical specialty area and initiates corrective actions when needed.
  • Calls in critical test results to physicians or nurses and maintains logs according to protocol.
  • Performs quality-control tests and analyzes data, taking corrective action when results are out of range.
  • Documents instrument checks and preventive maintenance and reports unresolved instrument issues to supervision.
  • Provides in-service training to laboratory staff and students.
  • Performs clerical functions and contributes to general laboratory operations.
  • Participates in department meetings and continuing education programs.
  • Observes hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Description
Job Summary:

The Medical Technologist will perform clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. The Medical Technologist will also maintain cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests in a designated medical specialty area, recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head or clinical pathologist when needed.
  • Calls in critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. Maintains the abnormal results log according to protocol. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.
  • Performs quality-control tests in a designated area. Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head as required. Documents actions taken. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the section head, or when appropriate, to the clinical pathologist.
  • Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Assists laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section head as required. Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the section head.
  • Provides in-service training to other laboratory staff and students in a designated area.
  • Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.
  • Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Performs specimen collection and processing duties according to policies established in the medical specialty area.
  • Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs.
  • Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree and the successful completion of an accredited medical technology program or the equivalent training, education, and experience.
  • ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized medical technology certification or categorical certification. (Note: Those with categorical certification only will be restricted to the discipline in which they hold the categorical certification.)
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Ability to work on a computer while sitting or standing
  • Perform repetitive hand movements
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases and occupational dangers
  • Ability to reach below, at, or above shoulder level
