Job summary

Cleveland Clinic Health System is seeking a Medical Technologist at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, OH. The role involves testing and interpreting laboratory results while adhering to CLIA standards and quality controls.

The position offers an evening shift (2:00 pm–10:30 pm) with weekend/holiday rotation, and a sign-on bonus up to $2,500. A MT certification or eligibility is highly preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science or CLIA high-complexity qualification.
  • Official transcripts must be submitted to verify degree completion.
  • Proof of degree conferral within three months after hire may be required.
  • Foreign education requires translation and credential evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Follow lab procedures for specimen handling, testing, reporting and records.
  • Maintain regulatory knowledge related to lab duties and CLIA requirements.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and document calibrations and maintenance.
  • Address quality issues and notify supervisors as needed.
  • Maintain instruments per manufacturer specifications and documentation practices.
  • Perform proficiency testing under CLIA regulations and document results.
  • Participate in continuing education and annual competency assessments.

We will hire our clinical laboratory testing personnel in three different job titles, based on educational background:

Medical Technologist

A caregiver in this position workseveningsfrom 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. with weekend and holiday rotation requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain regulatory knowledge and awareness as it pertain to specific job duties.

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

Assume responsibility for and take action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties.

Maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

Assume responsibility for good documentation practices and maintain clear and legible records.

Perform proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations i.e. analyze proficiency survey sample in the same manner as a patient specimens, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting.

Assume responsibility for participation in continuing education, professional development and required annual competency assessment.

Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant, or Laboratory Director.

May function as an educator and provides instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and the application of laboratory test protocols to students, employees, residents, etc.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited institution OR meets the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel
  • Candidates who have completed all academic requirements for a qualifying bachelor’s degree may be considered with submission of an official transcript reflecting completion of degree requirements.
  • Continued employment in this role is contingent upon verification of degree conferral within three months after hire and may include limitations on independent high-complexity testing duties until such verification is obtained.
  • Education outside of the United States requires diploma/transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from an HHS approved agency or nationally recognized organization such as NACES (National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc.) or AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.)
  • Must provide Diploma and/or transcripts

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Previous experience in a lab setting
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or certification eligible preferred, from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands include: Visual acuity to study specimens under a microscope.
  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.
  • Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle specimens and lab equipment required to process specimens and repair equipment.
  • May be required to stand for long periods of time.
  • Light lifting may be required.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
