Job summary

TriCities Hospital in Hopewell, VA, part of HCA Healthcare, seeks a Medical Technologist to join the laboratory team. The successful candidate will perform general lab policies, maintain quality controls, participate in competency testing, and assist with instrument troubleshooting per regulatory guidelines.

The role requires a Bachelor's or Associate's with MT/ASCP certification and credentialing within six months of hire. A strong emphasis on patient safety and ongoing training is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science is required.
• Associate's degree with MT certification accepted in lieu of bachelor's degree.
• MT (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist credential must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Know and apply general lab policies and department procedures, review policy changes.
• Assess situations and act independently with little supervision.
• Maintain competency in designated lab sections and participate in proficiency testing and CE.
• Complete mandatory annual trainings and assist with lab duties as needed.
• Train new employees and students in lab policies and procedures.

Job Summary And Qualifications

Major Responsibilities

• Knows, understands, and puts into practice general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures. Reviews all posted policy changes as required. Adheres to all regulatory guidelines.
• Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider the options, and formulate an appropriate course of action. Recognizes and performs duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision.
• Demonstrate initial and annual competency in all appropriate designated lab sections within set deadlines. Accurately performs proficiency testing when scheduled. Participates in continuing education activities.
• Participates in all facility/corporate mandatory annual training within set deadlines.
• Is cooperative in assisting the laboratory team in the completion of miscellaneous duties. This may include specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department.
• Organizes and completes daily tasks in assigned area{s}.
• Troubleshoots/resolves instrument problems and documents corrective action in appropriate log; when necessary, performs instrumentation repairs. Effectively investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate.
• Assures quality control is properly performed and logged, works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action.
• Preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment are performed and documented according to schedule.
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to train new employees and/or students in general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures.
• Demonstrates cultural competence by being able to explain procedures by utilizing communication interventions as appropriate for all customers across all ages and populations.
• Demonstrates knowledge and adheres to all policies relating to the JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals for the Laboratory, including, but not limited to critical call read back and patient identification
• Any other duties assigned.

Education - Experience - Certification

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technologist or related science is Required
• Associate's Degree with MT Certification from a nationally accredited association will be accepted in lieu of Bachelor's Degree
• Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist must be obtained within 6 months of hire or start in position
