Job Title: Medical Technologist
General Summary of Duties: The Medical Technologist performs professional laboratory work following established clinic procedures and performs laboratory tests on patient specimens for medical diagnosis.
Supervision Received: Reports directly to Laboratory Technical Supervisor.
Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Typical Working Conditions: May have exposure to communicable diseases, biohazard substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to medical environment.
Examples of Duties: (This may not include all of the duties assigned.)
Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine and stat blood and urine tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and medical staff. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to communicate clearly in writing or verbally. Able to effectively communicate through the telephone system when reporting critical results.
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related or scientific field is required; a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology is preferred.
Experience: One year experience as a clinical Medical Technologist is required; two years experience is preferred.
Skills: The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
License: Must hold a Florida State License as well as, be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
