Qualifications

Allergy/Immunology Department where children benefit from our specialists’ expertise, because our doctors treat children and only children with these conditions. The team ensures greater access for children and teens to pediatric experts in asthma and allergies, as well as primary (inherited) and secondary (acquired) immune system disorders.

About the Role:

The Medical Technician supports the department by being in collaboration with the Registered Nurse, under the direction of the Attending Physician and Clinic Operations Manager, directs patient flow, assists staff members in carrying out patient treatments, assists in specimen collection, phlebotomy and laboratory testing, and maintains a safe, clean and stocked ambulatory setting. Preps patients for visits to ensure smooth clinic flow for all physicians working with the multidisciplinary team.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED along with formal training certification as a Medical Assistant (Required)
  • Minimum Work Experience 1-year related experience in a healthcare setting (Preferred)
  • Required Skills/Knowledge If working in an environment where phlebotomy is performed, must successfully complete CNH phlebotomy training. Ability to work with a diverse staff and patient population and have excellent customer service skills. Basic computer knowledge necessary. Must be able to pass the CNH medication test (Child development and math calculations self-learning modules). Must be able to perform simple laboratory testing.

Functional Accountabilities
Clinic and Office Support

Answer phones and manage calls appropriately, i.e., directions, appointments, general questions, test results, and physician messages; refer all clinical questions to MD. Confirm appointments; obtain any medical information, appropriate insurance referrals and authorization for any testing that may be required by the physician prior to the appointment to ensure the ease of the patient experience and increase the productivity of the physicians. Print clinic schedules, ensure appropriateness of scheduled appointments and backfilling open appointment slots; mail reminder/no-show cards as appropriate. Prepare patients for upcoming appointments by capturing labs, x-ray reports and previous medical history as needed. Maintain sterile, organized work environment to include removal of expired stock and medications; monitor and maintain daily records of medical equipment as required. Maintain ordering office supplies, office files and other support duties as needed, i.e. mail distribution, faxing, copying, scanning.

Patient Care - Front Office

Prepare chart for new patients and/or assemble follow up patient charts to include consent forms, lab and x-ray results and any documentation from the previous visit. Work with patients and registration staff to ensure accurate demographics are obtained. Attach surveys, charge tickets, treatment plans and ATRs to charts as appropriate. Orient the family to the patient rights and responsibilities. Schedule patient for any ancillary testing as required by the physicians; ensure proper authorization is obtained; follow physician orders and directives precisely.

Patient Care: - Exam Room

Prepare the examination room for a patient examination and instruct/assist patient regarding clothing removal and patient gown use; obtain the patient’s medical history as needed for the physicians; collect and document data obtained about the patient’s condition (activity level, positioning, safety, level of consciousness, responsiveness behavior, respiratory status, perfusion) and report all to physician as well as chart in patient’s record. Perform and document vital signs to include temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry (if needed), height, weight, head circumference and respiratory rates. Complete and document screening questionnaires and patient history as needed. During patient visit, provide assistance to physician in documenting visit note and entering proposed orders, referrals and prescriptions, to be verified, edited and signed by physician before completion. Administer intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections—including immunizations/vaccinations/allergen immunotherapy- under the direct/onsite supervision of physician or physician delegate (physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse). Comfort anxious children undergoing a procedure by talking to them and using distractions. Monitor the patient throughout the visit and report any patient/family concerns to the manager for resolution; recognize and report pain.

Patient Care - Lab Services

Under direct/onsite supervision, perform laboratory tests; collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary method; and perform specific testing/procedures per individual clinic assignment which are varied in complexity; label all specimens with patient labels. Enter patient information, test requests, cancellations, and additions into computer order program. Perform computer searches for data inquiries and prints and retrieve reports as needed by the physicians. Request additional information from referring physicians as needed by the attending physicians; include clarifying questionable orders for lab or testing; process specimens by centrifugation, aliquoting and sorting into specific areas of the laboratory. Complete order forms for any ancillary testing the physician deems necessary during the patient visit; coordinate any stat or routine lab pickups. Provide basic patient care delivery which includes dressing changes, positioning patients, linen changes, assisting in ambulation, handing the proper instrumentation to physicians. Perform suture removal, EKGs, laser assistance, casting, holter monitor application, enemas, and other procedures as needed.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children’s National believes an individual’s base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children’s National compensation philosophy.
