Summary

The Medical Technician - Phlebotomist position accurately identities - assesses patient collection sites - and collects appropriate blood samples for laboratory testing procedures as ordered by healthcare providers. This position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The Medical Technician - Phlebotomist position is located within the Robert J. Dole VAMC in Wichita - KS.

Qualifications

To qualify for this positions - you must meet the following requirements. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. General Experience is: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position - or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical - microbiologic - hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field - e.g. - biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Duties

• ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION - YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performing specialized venipunctures - such as blood culture and serum drug levels - in order to ensure' proper collection at specified times using appropriate procedures and equipment
• Identifying patients in order to make certain that an accurate source of patient blood is obtained for testing by using armband - social security number - assigned identification number (when available) - computer orders - patient name - and/or room number
• Accessioning tests for all areas of the laboratory
• Troubleshooting inappropriate and/or outdated orders
• Coordinating with providers to validate unusual orders and prints bar code labels to be used by automated instrument platforms
• Communicating effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member
• Distributing specimens in a timely manner to various units and assures that volunteer couriers are timely in their rounds
• Training and/or assessing competency of medical students - residents - CBOC personnel and nurses regarding Medical Center blood collection policy and procedures
• Operating glassware washer and ensuring the availability and cleanliness of glassware utilized by the lab
• Answering telephone and re-routing calls from physicians and nurses - when appropriate - and helps in triaging provider inquiries to the appropriate area
• Functioning as a urine drug screen attendant (gender specific) providing the appropriate forms - observation - temperature testing - etc

• Evaluating and implementing new phlebotomy equipment as needed to improve safety or process
• Interpreting and applying written instructions
