Job summary

Wellstar Health System is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the Night shift. Under supervision you will perform clinical laboratory testing, maintain equipment, and ensure quality control in a fast-paced hospital lab.

You’ll document QA results and participate in performance improvement initiatives to support patient care. The role requires MT/MLS-type certification and at least 1 year of laboratory experience, with strong data entry and computer skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; MT(ASCP) or MLS certifications preferred.
• Minimum 1 year laboratory experience.
• Strong computer/data entry skills and ability to use Excel/Word.

Responsibilities

• Maintains acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing.
• Meets department standards for correct patient/specimen identification.
• Meets department standards for error rate in testing/reporting results.
• Documents QA investigations and corrective actions.
• Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation.
• Analyzes and reports lab data accurately within turnaround times.
• Interprets lab data in the context of clinical findings.
• Communicates findings and hand-offs to the team per procedures.
• Ensures compliance with LIS documentation and safety standards.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives and inspections.

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Supervisors, Manager or Director; performs clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established and approved protocols requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, maintains equipment and records, performs quality assurance activities related to test performance and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. Accuracy: Maintains acceptable accuracy in-patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing. Critical Thinking: Uses clinical/ theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data. Job Knowledge: Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures. Productivity: Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost, and availability of lab data Communication: Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand-off to team members. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Earns acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.
• Maintains instrumentation for testing.
• Uses clinical/ theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data.
• Reports lab data accurately and within established turnaround times and productivity standards.
• Recognizes the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectations.
• Interprets information from multiple sources.
• Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand-off to team members.
• Complies with Pending Log procedure for tracking laboratory test status.
• Documents in the LIS all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure.
• Hands-off information to others according to the department procedure and chain of command.
• Adheres to WellStars Standards of Behavior in a consistent fashion.
• Takes personal responsibility for corrective action on constructive criticism.
• Contributes to the Laboratory’s Performance Improvements and inspection readiness.
• Assists in analysis of new methods for testing including correlations and procedure writing.
• Assists in inspection preparation.
• Participates in the Laboratory Performance Improvement initiatives.
• Practices cost-efficient work processes that maintain high quality laboratory data.
• Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
• Maintains current knowledge and practice of WellStar policies and procedures, including LIS.
• Demonstrates adequate knowledge of laboratory regulatory compliance.
• Practices all Wellstar and Laboratory Safety Standards.
• Participates in meetings, committees, task forces and project teams.
• Completes monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.
• Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education:

• Bachelors Medical Technology or Bachelors Medical Science or Bachelors General or Masters Other / Related Field-Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

• MT(ASCP) - Medical Technologist or MT(AMT) - Medical Technologist or MT(AAB) - Medical Technologist or MT(HEW) - Medical Technologist or MLS(ASCP) - Medical Laboratory Scientist or MLS(AMT) - Medical Laboratory Scientist or MB(ASCP) - Molecular Biologist - American Society for Clinical Pathology or H(ASCP) - Hematology - American Society for Clinical Pathology or M(ASCP) - Microbiology - American Society for Clinical Pathology

Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 1 year Laboratory experience Preferred

Required Minimum Skills:

Computer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team. Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge. Epic and 3M experience preferred.
