Job summary

Wellstar Health System seeks a Medical Laboratory Technologist to perform clinical laboratory testing under supervision, ensuring accuracy and adherence to approved protocols. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Science or related field is required.
  • All certifications listed (MT(ASCP)/MLS/MB/etc.) are required upon hire.
  • Proficiency with LIS and hospital information systems is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accuracy in patient, QA, proficiency, and competency testing.
  • Analyzes, interprets, and reports lab data using clinical knowledge.
  • Maintains instrumentation and participates in QA and cost-efficient workflows.
  • Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and inspection readiness.
  • Ensures compliance with Wellstar policies and laboratory safety standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Supervisors, Manager or Director; performs clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established and approved protocols requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, maintains equipment and records, performs quality assurance activities related to test performance and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. Accuracy: Maintains acceptable accuracy in‑patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing. Critical Thinking: Uses clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data. Job Knowledge: Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures. Productivity: Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost, and availability of lab data. Communication: Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand‑off to team members. Performs other duties as assigned.

Core Responsibilities And Essential Functions
  • Maintains acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing.
    • Meets department standard for correct patient or specimen identification.
    • Meets department standard for error rate in testing or reporting patient or QC results.
    • Consistently documents investigation and correct interpretation of QA failures or trends.
    • Earns acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.
    • Maintains instrumentation for testing.
  • Uses clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data.
    • Reports lab data accurately and within established turnaround times and productivity standards.
    • Recognizes the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectations.
  • Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand‑off to team members.
    • Complies with Pending Log procedure for tracking laboratory test status.
    • Documents in the LIS all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure.
    • Hands‑off information to others according to the department procedure and chain of command.
    • Adheres to WellStars Standards of Behavior in a consistent fashion.
    • Takes personal responsibility for corrective action on constructive criticism.
  • Contributes to the Laboratory’s Performance Improvements and inspection readiness.
    • Assists in analysis of new methods for testing including correlations and procedure writing.
    • Assists in inspection preparation.
    • Participates in the Laboratory Performance Improvement initiatives.
    • Practices cost‑efficient work processes that maintain high quality laboratory data.
  • Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
    • Maintains current knowledge and practice of WellStar policies and procedures, including LIS.
    • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of laboratory regulatory compliance.
    • Practices all Wellstar and Laboratory Safety Standards.
    • Participates in meetings, committees, task forces and project teams.
    • Completes monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
  • Bachelors Medical Technology or Bachelors Medical Science or Bachelors General or Masters (Other-Preferred)

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist or MT(AMT) – Medical Technologist or MT(AAB) – Medical Technologist or MT(HEW) – Medical Technologist or MLS(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist or MLS(AMT) – Medical Laboratory Scientist or MB(ASCP) – Molecular Biologist – American Society for Clinical Pathology or H(ASCP) – Hematology – American Society for Clinical Pathology
Additional License(s) And Certification(s)

Persons who possess the technologist qualifications and have recently moved into the state and certified by that state (with NY, FL, CA license) or have recently completed the academic and training/experience requirements from an accredited MLS program may be temporarily classified once as technologists for eighteen (18) months to afford the persons an opportunity to successfully complete an approved qualifying examination within 1 1/2 years required.

Required Minimum Experience

Minimum 1 year Laboratory experience required.

Required Minimum Skills

Computer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team. Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge. Epic experience preferred.
