Ophthalmology Consultants in Des Peres, MO is seeking an Ophthalmic Scribe to document visits and procedures in real-time, supporting physicians and ensuring accurate EMR input.

You may travel to other St. Louis metro locations as needed, with mileage reimbursement. This full-time on-site role requires attention to HIPAA, teamwork with clinical staff, and maintaining high-quality patient care while navigating a fast-paced ophthalmology clinic.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1 year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
• Efficient in EMR and accurate information recording.
• Strong typing, spelling, grammar and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Accurately document medical visits and procedures as performed by the Physician.
• Manage EMR operations for patients.
• Understand basic ICD-9 codes when inputting into EMR.
• Ensure accurate procedure coding/charges and correct diagnosis codes.
• Assist in clinic flow and anticipate Physician needs.
• Open/close exam rooms and assist with testing to maintain patient flow.
• Maintain discretion and professionalism.
• Travel between offices as needed.

SUMMARY

The primary goal of a Scribe is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the Physician they are working for. This employee allows the Doctor to focus on what is most important, the patient.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Accurately and thoroughly document medical visits and procedures as they are being performed by the Physician.
• Responsible for the operation of the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) of patients.
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of examination and procedure codes (ICD-9 codes) when inputting into the EMR system.
• Ensure that accurate procedure coding/charges for all procedures/drugs for all patients and correct diagnosis codes are used.
• Anticipate Physician needs to facilitate the flow of the clinic.
• Open and close exam rooms as needed.
• Help with testing and keep rooms filled to maintain flow of the clinic.
• Must be discreet, tactful, and modest in performance of the duties so as not to distract medical staff from patient care.
• Good judgment, organization ability, attention to detail, and ability to be self-motivated are especially important.
• Must be willing to travel between offices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Working knowledge of medical terminology and accepted abbreviations.
• Efficient in using EMR and ability to accurately record information.
• Good typing, spelling, grammar and oral communication skills.
• Communication skills and the ability to coordinate and cooperate with multiple members of the health care team.
• Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.
• Must comply with HIPAA confidentiality standards when communicating patient information.
• Provides excellent patient care and is energetic and empathetic with patients.
• Consistently displays positive rapport with fellow employees.
• Cooperates with supervisory staff and Physicians.
• Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• Minimum Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Minimum Required: One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES AND CREDENTIALS

• Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) certification is preferred, but not required

SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY

• Requires proficient keyboarding skills, use of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and image management system.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• This role requires a variety ofphysicalactivities to effectively perform essential job functions. The position involves frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%). Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs. Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology. Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus is required100% of the time. Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
