Job description

OVERVIEW

The medical physicist applies advanced principles of physics to innovate and optimize medical radiation therapies, devices, and technologies. Key responsibilities encompass the planning and execution of radiation treatments, ensuring accurate dosimetry for patients, and participating directly in diagnostic and therapeutic processes. Within radiotherapy physics, the physicist is tasked with ensuring precision and accuracy through sophisticated computational methods to create tailored treatment plans for individual patients. This involves utilizing imaging data to delineate target volumes. Additionally, the physicist is responsible for the operational integrity of radiological equipment, ensuring it meets high standards of safety, effectiveness, and performance through rigorous quality assurance (QA) procedures and troubleshooting. Research into the biological effects of radiation informs the development of novel treatment modalities and safety protocols. The physicist also serves an educational role, providing guidance on radiation safety, problem-solving, clinical solutions, and implementing quality management systems.

SCHEDULE
  • Practice hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
  • Part‑time physicist role involving on‑site presence for 2 days/week, with an additional half‑day remote availability as needed (up to 20 hours).
  • Provision of coverage during colleague absences (sick leave and vacation).
RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Oversee and implement the Radiation Oncology Quality Assurance and Safety program, supporting clinical staff with relevant policies and procedures.
  2. Manage all ancillary QA equipment used in medical physics, ensuring proper preventative maintenance and routine calibrations of devices (e.g., patient diodes, daily therapist QA).
  3. Collaborate with alternate physicists to maintain continuous on‑site patient care coverage during clinic hours, including contingency coverage for vacations and sick leave. Maintain a coverage calendar with at least 30 days’ notice for changes, and be available for emergency consultations as required.
  4. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as accreditation standards pertinent to medical physics services.
  5. Consult closely with Radiation Oncologists, Dosimetrists, and Radiation Therapists to facilitate safe and effective patient treatment. Provide initial physics consultation for treatment planning and review alongside the radiation oncologist and dosimetrist, including specialized dose measurements and calculations.
  6. Administer and maintain all software systems used for treatment planning, monitor unit calculations, and QA processes, overseeing necessary upgrades.
  7. Conduct daily, monthly and annual quality assurance testing for linear accelerators, CT simulators and treatment planning systems in accordance with regulatory standards. Serve as the primary contact for addressing equipment downtime consultation.
  8. Oversee dosimetry practices, performing reviews for each patient plan. Provide assistance to dosimetrists as needed and assure quality assurance standards for each treatment plan, particularly for IMRT. Involve in weekly chart round reviews.
  9. Assume dosimetry responsibilities in the absence of the dosimetrist.
  10. Be present during all HyperArc/SBRT/SRS/SRT high‑dose treatments and any other procedures determined by the radiation oncologists.
  11. Responsible for commissioning and maintaining the HyperArc and stereotactic machine models within the treatment planning system, along with the upkeep of ancillary QA equipment. Act as the point of contact for radiation safety evaluations from regulatory body surveys.
  12. Perform weekly reviews of patient charts, maintaining all pertinent records relating to patient consults and QA activities as warranted.
  13. Manage all physics credentialing, planning, and oversight related to RTOG protocol involvement. Initiate, implement, and execute procedures for additional treatment types, accreditations, or certifications.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Master of Science degree in physics, biophysics, medical physics, radiological physics, nuclear engineering or health physics is required.
  • A minimum of two years of clinical experience, either through relevant employment or a clinical Radiation Oncology residency, is required.
  • Eligibility for American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification is mandatory; if not currently certified, obtaining certification within three years of hiring is essential.
  • Must be eligible for State Certification (CRE) through Ohio.
