Job description

Overview

Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers of Colorado (RMCC) has an opportunity for an experienced, self‑motivated medical physicist as a result of a retiring physics staff member. The immediate opening is at our Lone Tree site at Sky Ridge Medical Center, covering a busy practice treating roughly 40–50 patients per day on two linear accelerators (Varian Edge and Varian iX; the iX will be replaced by the end of 2025). With a caseload of approximately 150 SBRTs and 50 SRS cases per year, we also have a low volume of HDR cases (Bracy Vision – mainly cylinders) and are currently implementing a Gamma Tile program. This site operates in an Aria/Eclipse environment with the RadFormation suite.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $220,000.00 – $250,000.00. Pay is based on factors including education, work experience, and certification. RMCC also offers health, dental, and vision plans; a wellness program; health savings account; flexible spending accounts; 401(k) retirement plan; life insurance; short‑term and long‑term disability insurance; an Employee Assistant Program; paid time off and holiday pay; and tuition reimbursement.

Responsibilities
  • Determine the need for, specify, and procure dosimetric and treatment‑planning equipment, including measurement instruments to calibrate all treatment equipment and monitoring devices, computerized treatment‑planning systems, computerized water phantom systems with appropriate ionization chambers and diodes, film densitometry systems, etc.
  • Participate in the specification, selection, and acceptance of radiation‑producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment‑planning systems.
  • Supervise arrangements for proper maintenance of radiation treatment equipment.
  • Periodically evaluate all equipment for continued utility, performance, age, and condition, and make recommendations on practical lifespan, obsolescence, and replacement.
  • Maintain responsibility for the design and implementation of the aspects of the quality‑management program involving external‑beam radiotherapy equipment and review and approve procedures followed by the radiation therapy staff.
  • Advise and consult with physicians to provide technical direction during patient planning or treatment; develop protocols for performing and checking monitor‑unit calculations to ensure agreement with written prescriptions.
  • Participate in chart rounds to ensure fulfillment of prescriptions and review any dose or patient‑setup changes.
  • Complete, keep, and maintain proper records of all required documentation relating to radiation treatment plans, equipment QA, and calibration records; participate in clinical instruction of newly hired radiation staff and radiation‑therapy students.
  • Conduct HDR (high‑dose‑rate) and LDR (low‑dose‑rate) brachytherapy procedures as needed; may mentor junior physicists.
  • Direct the radiation oncology physics program, including the technical direction of medical dosimetrists, therapy equipment service engineers, and other physics support staff.
Qualifications

Minimum: Master’s degree in Physics or Medical Physics from an accredited institution; five to six years experience in clinical radiation physics; current certification and continuing education with the American College of Radiology; certification by the American Board of Radiology or the Board of Medical Physics; valid state license for medical physics as required.

Physical Demands

Ability to use computer components (keyboard, digitizer, trackball, mouse) and stand for up to 8 hours; lift a 40‑pound block to shoulder level; sufficient visual acuity to distinguish structures and isodose displays on a computer monitor; align treatment fields and monitor patients during radiation therapy treatment.

Additional Requirements

Proof of influenza vaccination upon commencement; reasonable accommodations will be considered for exemptions. All qualified candidates must pass a background check and a non‑federal drug test (excluding marijuana) after offer and before hire.
