Job summary

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) seeks a Senior Technical Advisor at its Washington, DC headquarters to provide expert opinions for accident investigation and related research programs in physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, and biomechanics.

The successful physician will have broad clinical experience and knowledge of transportation safety, toxicology, pathology, impairment determination, and the ability to communicate complex medical issues in plain language.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant events in the other modes of transportation - railroad, transit, highway, marine, pipeline, hazardous materials, and commercial space. We determine the probable causes of the accidents and events that we investigate, and issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences. This full-time position is located at NTSB Headquarters in Washington, DC. The incumbent will serve as a Senior Technical Advisor providing expert opinions for accident investigation and research programs of the NTSB in the areas of physiology and medical fitness, toxicology and pathology, medical epidemiology, and biomechanics.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a physician in any specialty with clinical experience who has extensive knowledge and experience in areas such as transportation safety, toxicology; clinical and forensic pathology; determinations of cognitive or physical impairment related to the cause of an accident, research methodology; injury analysis; and using medical literature to provide evidence-based support for medical conclusions. In addition, the candidate will also possess expertise in communicating complex medical issues in plain language and writing technical reports. Finally, the ideal candidate must be available to respond to transportation accidents, anywhere across the United States to investigate medical and injury issues related to transportation accidents.
