Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Blacksburg, VA is seeking a Medical Office Technician for the Flex VC-Blacksburg site to provide clinical and administrative support in an outpatient clinic. You will assist medical staff, greet patients, and help coordinate care as part of a collaborative team.

The role includes waived testing, specimen collection, patient transport, EMR use, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards. A high school diploma is required; certification within 6 months is expected.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must obtain federal drug screen collector credential and federal breath alcohol technician certification within 6 months of hire.
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification within first 90 days of hire.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-work skills; keen attention to detail and dexterity.
  • Must be organized and self-motivated; proficient in EMR and clinical/clerical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Create a positive experience for patients by welcoming and assisting them throughout the clinic.
  • Perform HAA duties and Clinical Assistant duties as trained.
  • Conduct waived and in-house testing based on equipment and competency.
  • Maintain laboratory without supervision and prepare specimens for transport with proper labeling.
  • Verify patient identification and orders for accuracy.
  • Assist nursing staff in patient care and transport between areas.
  • Maintain equipment, QC, and compliance with COLA/CLIA documents.
  • Order and stock laboratory supplies and participate in staff training.

The Medical Office Technician provides day to day staffing in an outpatient clinic setting, both clinically and administratively, depending on the need of the practice. Accountable for performing all responsibilities of the Healthcare Administrative Associate as well as clinical assistant responsibilities as appropriate based on training, education, and competency.   • Creates a positive experience for our patients by welcoming and assisting the patient as they move throughout the clinic.
  • Performs HAA job duties, as detailed in the HAA job description.
  • Performs Clinical Assistant job duties, as detailed in the Clinical Assistant job description.
  • Performs waived and other testing inhouse based upon equipment available, documented training and competency.
  • Must be able to maintain laboratory without supervision.
  • Obtains patient specimen using appropriate equipment and technique.
  • Verifies patient identification and order ensuring accuracy.
  • Reviews pertinent patient history associated with blood draws.
  • Assess most appropriate blood draw site, selecting gauge needle, site preparation and appropriate pressure after venipuncture.
  • Observes safety regulations and universal precautions in collection, processing, and disposal of laboratory specimens.
  • Prepares samples for transport to reference laboratories ensuring all specimens are properly labeled and order matches specimen.
  • Reports abnormal or critical results to the appropriate physician/ACP or clinical team member.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, performing QC's and calibrating laboratory equipment within the practice and as appropriate to education and training.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to the practice manager or designee.
  • Maintains required COLA and CLIA documents.
  • Maintains neat, clean and well stocked work area; assist with ordering, dating, and sorting laboratory supplies.
  • Order laboratory supplies from appropriate sources, as needed.
  • Participates in training of clinical staff, x-ray technicians and physicians/ACPs in basic office laboratory procedures.
  • Assists nursing personnel in patient care and transport to/from examination rooms, laboratory, x-ray and waiting area.
  • Maintains competency in all areas of responsibility, in part, by reviewing new and revised guidelines, procedures and policies.
  • Acquires and maintain knowledge of current regulatory standards and assist with conformance of standards.
What We Require:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: N/A

Velocity Care will require employee to obtain federal drug screen collector credential and federal breath alcohol technician certification within 6 months of hire.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required within first 90 days of hire.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-work skills required. Must have keen attention to detail, superb dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be organized and self-motivated. Must become proficient in use of electronic medical record, clinical and clerical office procedures and equipment. Clerical, medical terminology knowledge preferred.

Compensation Range: $16.18 - $22.65 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
